Demilt, well-known retired farmer-stockman of Nuckolls county (sic), died at his home here Tuesday evening at about 8:30, after an extended illness. Although his health had not been good for many months, he was a regular visitor on the downtown streets until confined to his home last Sunday. Mr. Demilt was born June 28, 1861 in Albany, Mo. He moved to Nuckolls county (sic) in 1892, after five years spent in Saline county (sic) and three in Jefferson county (sic). Since that time he was actively engaged in farming and the raising of livestock until his retirement a few years ago. Surviving are a son Charles of Nelson; five daughters, Mrs. Nettie Meyer, Mrs. Ola Meyer and Mrs. Effie Bargen of Nelson, Mrs. Winnie Williams of Hastings, and Mrs. Audrey McCutchan of Nelson; a sister, Mrs. Ed Sykes of Ruskin and a brother, Gus Demilt of Sidney. Mrs. Demilt, to whom he was married in 1881, preceded him in death on October 7, 1939. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock in the Christian church here. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, May 15, 1947 ========== James Andrew DeMilt, son of Augustus and Elenor DeMilt, was born in Gentry County near Albany, Missouri, June 28, 1861, and departed this life at his home in Nelson, Nebraska, May 13, 1947, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 16 days. He was united in marriage to Nancy E. Whiteley October 2, 1881, at Albany, Missouri. This couple enjoyed 58 years of happy wedded life before her passing on October 7, 1939. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. DeMilt moved to Nebraska settling in Saline County and lived there five years when they moved to Jefferson County, living there three years, and in 1892 moving to Nuckolls County where they have been honored residents in our community. Mr. DeMilt united with the Christian Church about 25 years ago where he remained a faithful member until he was called home. Left to mourn his departure are one son and five daughters: Chas. DeMilt, Mrs. Ola Meyer, Mrs. Nettie Meyer, Mrs. Effie Bargen, Mrs. Audrey McCutchan all of Nelson; and Mrs. Winona Williams of Hastings, and two daughters dying in infancy. One sister, Mrs. Ed Sykes of Ruskin, and one brother, A.M. DeMilt of Sidney, Nebraska; 18 grandchildren, one granddaughter, Mrs. Fern Kassebaum having passed away in July, 1946; 21 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service as (sic) held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Christian church, conducted by Rev. C.M. Fourst, of Chester, his former pastor, assisted by Rev. J.W. Kennedy. The music was furnished by Mrs. Davis Smith, Mrs. L.W. Richling, O.L. Aikin and J.E. Portwood. The following poem by James Whitcomb Riley was read: I can say, and I will not say That he is dead--he is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how every fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you--O you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and glad return, Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of him still as the same, I say, He is not dead--He is just away!
