Description	:	James Benjamin Rippey was the eldest son and second child of Daniel Baxter Rippey (1855-1919) and Nancy Catherine Spencer (1848-1931). His given name at birth was Benjamin Franklin Rippey; prior to adulthood -- for reasons unknown -- he became James Benjamin Rippey. Read More	James Benjamin Rippey was the eldest son and second child of Daniel Baxter Rippey (1855-1919) and Nancy Catherine Spencer (1848-1931). His given name at birth was Benjamin Franklin Rippey; prior to adulthood -- for reasons unknown -- he became James Benjamin Rippey. By 1900, he had temporarily moved to the Lead Mine District in Wythe County, Va., where he was boarding with the Stoots family and working as an iron ore miner. One reason cited for the move was to earn money to bail his brother out of jail and save the family home near Lambsburg, Carroll County, Va., just north of the NC/VA state line. (In early 1900, his younger brother, Robert Sidney "Sid" Rippey, had been accused of burning a barn -- a fire that had in reality been set by their Spencer first cousin, Lacy Jake Norman, 1881-1946. When the 1900 Federal Census was taken, Sid Rippey had been imprisoned for 3 months in Wytheville, Wythe County, Va.) Several tragedies befell the Rippey family in the early 20th century. Also in 1900, James Benjamin Rippey's first cousin on the Rippey side, Billy Surratt, murdered (slashed the neck of) James' brother-in-law, James Turner. Turner, who had been married to James' eldest sister, Sophia Elizabeth "Bettie," died in the arms of James Benjamin Rippey, bleeding heavily from the neck and saying, "I can't breathe." The fight had begun after one's hogs got into the other's corn mash (moonshine); Billy Surratt was imprisoned (with Sid Rippey in Wytheville) in the spring of 1900 but later acquitted, presumably in self-defense. Later, Sid Rippey broke bond and fled Carroll County, threatening the family house and property since they had been put up as collateral; the cabin remained with the family when nearly $500 was paid to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. (Sid eventually surfaced in northern Iowa under the name Robert Sidney but never returned to Carroll County and for his safety broke off contact with the family.) On April 29, 1906, another of James' brothers, Ewell W. Rippey, was shot and killed near Lambsburg (in an alcohol-fueled "duel") by Logan Vernon, who escaped to Oregon -- only to be apprehended in 1917 (following the deaths of Logan's parents; authorities followed a U.S. mail trail) and sent by train back to Carroll County to stand trial. Following the death of James' father in 1919, there seemed to be few reasons to stay in Carroll County. James, who had married his first cousin, Nancy Surratt (brother of Billy Surratt) in 1905, packed his possessions in early 1920 and set out with his wife and four children, ages ranging from 1 to 14, by train (through Roanoke) for Fluvanna County in central Virginia. There, he bought a farm near Kents Store from the Halderman family, who were West Virginia natives and may have returned there. A cousin, William "Taylor" Easter, had already moved to central Virginia and had recommended the area to the Rippey family. James Benjamin Rippey spent much of the rest of his life on the Kents Store farm, where his two youngest children were born. His first wife, Nancy, died of melanoma in 1928. Less than a year later, in 1929, he married Annie Diggs, who was not good with children and was disliked by the Rippey kids. Carl, the oldest, was already on his own when his mother died, but the other three boys (Arnold, Bill, and Greeley) "escaped" by joining the military (all three served during WWII). Martha moved to Richmond and married. The youngest Rippey child was adopted by neighbors, Terrell P. and Elizabeth G. (Edwards) Evans. James Benjamin Rippey died in Staunton, Va., on January 6, 1955, at the age of 76, from a cerebral hemorrhage.
