In addition to John, Mary, Eliza, Cornelia, and Dan Rippey, other family members who came to Carroll Co. in 1867/8 included Eliza's daughter, Martitia Adams (Martitia's father, William B. Adams, was a Civil War casualty in Richmond, VA), as well as Dan's younger siblings, John B., Mary Catherine, Emma Roxie, and twins Sarah Ellen and James Henry Rippey. On 23 Apr 1874 in Stewarts Creek, Surry Co., NC, Dan Rippey married Nancy Catherine Spencer (1848-1931), who was about 6 1/2 years older than her husband. They had eight children between 1875 and 1990, but only four (Bettie Snow, Tena Bobbitt, James Rippey, and Robert Sidney) had children of their own. Mary and Minnie died young in 1885 of "flux," while Ewell was shot by his "best friend" (and 2nd cousin), Logan Vernon, in 1906. Sid was falsely accused in a barn-burning incident in 1900 involving his Spencer 1st cousin Lace Norman, served some time in prison, then broke bond and disappeared, later resurfacing in northern Iowa. Rosa (1890-1991) married Russell Cosner and had stepchildren, but no children of her own. Dan Rippey died on 12 Jan 1919 at the age of 63, less than a week after the death of his wife's mother, Sophia (Stockner) Spencer Flinchum/Lynch. Dan's cause of death was listed as Bright's Disease, but he was also known to have suffered from stomach problems, and reportedly had his stomach "pumped" by his brother-in-law, Norman Bobbitt.
