Description	:	Nancy Catherine (Spencer) Rippey (1848-1931) was the daughter of Ewell Spencer (1824-1864) and Sophia Stockner (1827-1918). Her father, Ewell (29th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Company E), died instantly of a bullet to the head in the Civil War at Drewry's Bluff, VA, near Richmond, on May 16, 1864. Her mother, Sophia, had a premonition of the death when Ewell's coat fell off a chair at the family home shortly before they learned the news. Much later, following the death of her husband, Daniel Baxter Rippey, in 1919, she briefly continued to live with son, James Benjamin Rippey (1878-1955)... By the time of the 1930 Census, Nancy was living in Surry Co., NC, with daughter Christina (Tena) Bobbitt, and her family. In addition to James and Christina, children who survived to adulthood were Sophia Elizabeth (Betty) and Rosa. Children who died young were Mary and Minnie (both died of "flux" in July 1885), and Ewell (shot in a duel by best friend and second cousin Logan Vernon in Carroll County on April 29, 1906). Son Robert Sidney "Sid" was falsely accused of burning a barn and imprisoned in Wythe Co., VA., in the spring of 1900. After being bailed out, Sid later disappeared -- forever.
