The 18-year-old, Ewell W. Rippey, was the next to youngest of eight children of Daniel Baxter Rippey (1855-1919) and Nancy Catherine Spencer (1848-1931). The friend (and second cousin), John "Logan" Vernon (1884 - 1923), was the son of Ewell Vernon (1840-1916) and Piercy Leonard (1846-1916). According to Ewell Rippey's niece, Logan claimed that Ewell Rippey had hit him with brass knuckles, prompting a retaliatory gunshot from Logan Vernon. Ewell Rippey's brother, James Benjamin Rippey, was at the town's blacksmith shop adjacent to a chestnut grove and heard the shot. Rushing to the scene, James B. Rippey found his brother "dying at his feet," clutching five chestnuts in his hand. In some versions of the story, the fight was a duel between the two young men. Following the shooting, Logan Vernon went to the house of his older brother, William "Billy" Vernon (1879-1968). According to one of Billy Vernon's great-granddaughters, Logan had blood on him when he arrived and kissed Billy's 6-year-old daughter, Julina, on the cheek. There was blood on her cheek when Logan left. After the shooting, Ewell's body was taken to Moody's Funeral Home in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Ewell W. Rippey (1887-1906) was laid to rest at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church, according to funeral home records: Newel Riffey, Dan Riffey, Shot, 29 Apr, Farmer, Single, 18Y, Flower Gap Cem. The Rippey family's account took Logan Vernon to Oregon, where he became a sheepherder. More recent research by a Vernon descendant unearthed Logan's will, dated Dec. 1, 1922, which indicated he had joined the U.S. Army and had served for several years. The will, which left his possessions to his brother, George F. Vernon, noted George should receive "payments and moneys that may be due or collectible by me, both as in my correct name and in the name I volunteered in, which was Joseph R. Rash." In 1917, correspondence between Logan Vernon and family members, regarding his parents' estate, led Carroll County authorities to Pendleton, Oregon, where he was apprehended and returned to Virginia and the following year sentenced to 16 years in prison. (He may have been the Logan Vernon in a Virginia State Prison in the 1920 Census.) During the long period on the lam, he contracted TB. The Logan family's account says he got TB from hiding in the damp. In the Rippey family's account, representatives of Logan Vernon's family visited Ewell's brother, James B. Rippey, after Logan became ill. The Vernons asked the Rippeys for consent to let Logan return home to die. Following a confirmation letter from the Virginia governor (likely Elbert Lee Trinkle, who took office in February 1922) that Logan Vernon was terminally ill, James B. Rippey reportedly permitted Logan to be freed. Sometime following his release from prison, Logan Vernon was admitted to a veterans' hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, where his died of tuberculosis on April 21, 1923. Note: Ewell's middle name was likely "Wesley," as his two grandfathers were Ewell Spencer and John "Wesley" Rippey.
