Read More	CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS CALL James Daniel Dickinson, distinguished soldier-citizen, passed peacefully to his Maker at 6:45 last Monday evening, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. C. Gay, on Sundance Hill. The end came suddenly and unexpected, while Mr. Dickinson was seated in a rocking chair engaged in conversation with his daughter. About two years ago he had suffered a paralytic stroke, followed by another last winter, and the third and fatal one came Monday evening. The remains were taken to Deadwood on Wednesday morning by Undertaker Frost, to be shipped from that city to Moorcroft, Wyo., for interment by the side of Mrs. Dickinson who passed away a number of years ago. Mr. Dickinson was one of the three surviving Civil war veterans in this vicinity, the remaining two being James Rathburn and S. A. Hunnicutt. The deceased was born in Ohio, July 31st, 1841, being almost eighty- five years old at the time of his death. Mr. Dickinson served three years in the Civil war with distinction and honor, enlisting in the 24th Iowa Infantry from Cedar county. He was in one of the hardest battles of the war at Red River, La., was with General Banks in the battle of Champion Hill and several other engagements, during one of which he was severely wounded in the neck. Part of the company was captured and sent to Libby prison. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic post of Tipton, Ia. Mr. Dickinson came to Butte county from near Moorcroft some eight or ten years ago, and made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Gay, near Arpan, until Mr. Gay's death a few years ago, when he moved to Belle Fourche. Besides his daughter, Mrs. Gay, he is survived by another daughter, living in Sioux Falls, and one son, residing on a ranch near New Haven. Northwest Post: May 18, 1926 James D. Dickinson: Born 1841 in Ohio, he traveled by covered wagon to Tipton Iowa. As a private in the Civil War, Co. B 24th regiment IA, he was wounded 1864 at Winchester VA and left on the battle field for 3 days before rescue. Married at Tipton 1867 to Hannah A. Geesaman. Had 8 children, Sheldon, Millie, Nancy, Minnie, Mary, James, John, Iva. Has a brother named Charles. Active on his farm 30 years until he was paralyzed in 1923 at age 81. He was an optimist, honest, and liked kids. He and wife lived in Tipton before moving to Wyoming. He lived awhile with daughter Iva Gay.
