In the 1925 Iowa Census, residents were asked to give their parents' names, including their mother's maiden name. James named his father as J.D. Howell but his mother's information was left blank. (J.D. Howell's middle initial has been incorrectly transcribed as J.B. Howell in that 1925 census. By clicking on the census record and looking at the actual record, it may be seen that the initials were given as J.D. Howell.) The obituary for James' father, J.D. Howell Sr., published in the Moulton Weekly Tribune on March 3, 1927, named James as his son. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Daily Courier, Tuesday, October 29, 1940, Page 14: J.D. HOWELL Bloomfield.–James D. (Jim) Howell, 76, died Monday at his home in Moulton after a paralytic stroke suffered a week ago. He is survived by his wife, Liuella [sic], and eight children, Paul and Junior of Moulton, Mrs. Charles Stansberry, Mrs. Jim Dodge, Mrs. Milton Vogle of Moulton, Mrs. Cam Shelton and Mrs. Roy Spurgeon of Ottumwa, and Mrs. E. Spurgeon of Bloomfield. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Moulton Christian church with the Rev. L.R. Hudson of Bloomfield in charge. Burial was in the Memorial Lawn cemetery in Ottumwa. He was born near Orleans and had spent all his life in and near Moulton.
