It is understood that they had on previous occasions had quarrels. He was armed with a revolver, it is stated, and reports point strongly to Walker's action being self defense. "Lamar Daily News"--Monday, May 9, 1921--page 1 INQUEST ON AT BRISTOL-------Special to The News Bristol, Colo. May 9 - The inquest over the body of J.E. Harrison is being held here this afternoon by Coroner L.E. Likes. Harrison was shot by Earl Walker Saturday morning at the latter's home seven miles northwest of here and died Sunday noon from the effects. Walker who was arrested Saturday and lodged in the county jail at Lamar, was brought here together with the body of the deceased man and the inquest is being held in the People's Theatre, with District Attorney Allyn Cole representing the State and Hon. W.B. Gordon is present, representing the firm of Gordon & Gordon who have been retained by Walker. At 4 o'clock this afternoon, the case was practically closed but still not in the hands of the jury. Walker's plea is self defense, it being stated that Harrison had fires two shots with a revolver before Walker fired the shot into Harrison's stomach that killed him. Harrison will be buried Tuesday afternoon. He is survived by a wife and several small children. A great crowd filled the theatre this afternoon for the hearing. "Lamar Daily News"--Tuesday, May 10, 1921--page 1 BRISTOL MAN IS RELEASED Earl Walker arrested for the murder of J.E. Harrison, who died Sunday noon as a result of being shot Saturday, was released Monday following an inquest over the remains of Harrison held at Bristol Monday. The coroner's inquest, required all afternoon, with the jury bringing in a verdict of self defense late in the evening. The story of tragedy and its cause unfolded at the inquest, is briefly as follows: Walker and Harrison, both farmers living seven miles northwest of Bristol, had been on bad terms for six or eight months, the first break in their relations coming about over the sale by Harrison to Walker of a cow, said to have been mortgaged. The quarrel again developed when Walker in his capacity of driver of a school bus for the Bristol Consolidated School, undertook to rebuke children of Harrison's for conduct in the bus. Walker is said to have resigned his position as driver because of this trouble. Testimony of witnesses told of threats by both Harrison and his wife to take the life of Walker. Coming to the day of the killing, Saturday, May 7, Walker and an employee, were at work on his farm building fence, when Harrison and wife, as well as other members of their family drove up in a car en route to Lamar. As they drove up Walker and his hired man were seated under a wagon by the side of the road. Harrison asked his son to stop the car, that he wanted to see Walker. Leaving the car, testimony showed that Harrison approached Walker, who picked up an iron rod used to hold the end gate in his wagon and warned Harrison to stop or he would hit him. Walker carried out his threat and struck at Harrison with the rod. Witnesses testified that Mrs. Harrison called to her husband to come to the car and get a gun and kill Walker. There was conflicting evidence on the words spoken here, but at least Harrison did return to the car, secured a revolver, and while Walker was securing his Winchester, which was lying over the fence, fired one shot at him. Mrs. Harrison testified that her husband fired a second shot into the air, but other witnesses testified that the second shot was fired with Harrison resting his revolver on a post and taking deliberate airm. By this time Walker had secured his Winchester and fired at Harrison, the bullet entering the right side, going through the body and coming out on the left side almost at the same level as it entered. The bullet did not penetrate the clothing, just through the skin and was found at the top of his stocking. Harrison was a man who weighed in the neighborhood of 185 pounds, while Walker's weight is place at 130 pounds. Harrison is survived by a wife and several children, was buried this afternoon services being held at Bristol. Adams & Kirkpatrick of this city were in charge. Could not find an obituary for Harrison. James Edward is my granduncle. He is the son of James Edward and Alice Roseltha (Robinson) Harrison. He married Amy Eggleston.
