Dec 7, 1927 - Carroll Times - James O'Herron died at his home Friday morning at 9 o'clock after being in poor health since August, suffering with diebetis and complications. Since he was first taken ill he had not been confined to his bed until Wednesday and Thursday of last week. His death came peacefully on the morning of December 2. He had been given a hypodermic by his physician the evening before from which he did not awaken and was claimed by death while he slept. Mr. O'Herron was one of the influential members of the St. Joseph church and for many years served it as treasurer. He performed his duties accurately and well as was his custom when given a task to do. The birthplace of Mr. O'Herron was Manhattonville, N.Y., now a part of New York City, where he was born August 16, 1844. When he was nine years old his father, James O'Herron, died and the mother and family came westward, locating in Wilmington, Illinois. It was here the small boy grew to young manhood and when he was 18 years of age left for Chicago where he learned the Iron moulder trade. On November 18, 1869, he was married at the St. John's church, Chicago, to Miss Martha Hughes. They made their home in that city for ten years, and in 1879 came to Carroll county, locating on a farm six miles west of Carroll. Some time later Mr. O'Herron purchased a farm three and a half miles north of this city which was the home until 1911, when he retired from active farm work and moved to the present residence of the family at 108 South Clark street. Mr. and Mrs. O'Herron had the privilege to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary eight years ago, November 18, 1919, when one of the happy days in the history of the family was enjoyed to the utmost. Of the ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. O'Herron, two died in infancy, Mary Agnes and Nellie. Frank died in 1896 and Mattie (Sister M. Redempta) died in 1908. The surviving children are Sister M. Viola of Coon Rapids, Andrew of Charles City; James and Joseph O'Herron of Carroll; Margaret (Mrs. W. E. Mengis) and Tessie at home. Mrs. O'Herron died in this city June 15, 1926, and after that time the daughter, Tessie, carefully looked after her father's home. When he became ill in August Mr. and Mrs. Mehgis and family gave up their home to assist in looking after the comfort of Mr. O'Herron. Mr. O'Herron was a kindly man with a love for his home and a pride in his children. He was the last of a family of eight children. Funeral services with a requiem high mass were held at the St. Joseph church Monday morning nt 9 o'clock and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery. All of the children were home called by their father's illness and death. Two nieces, Anna and Tessie Murphy, of Chicago, also attended the funeral.
