Read More	Rites Wednesday for James Durbin Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon for James Durbin, 80, whose death occurred October 31, 1948, following an attack of pneumonia. The services were held in the large Durbin home, southwest of Emerson and were attended by a large gathering of friends and neighbors. The services were conducted by the Rev. R. V. Felt of Red Oak, a former pastor, and the Rev. C. H. Boos of Emerson. the Rev. Mr. Felt spoke of the love Mr. Durbin had for his community's development and especially of his interest in the old Asbury Church and maintaining its religious influence for young people. Mr. Durbin, who was born near Iowa City on a Johnson County farm, January 16, 1868, came to Mills County at the age of four in a covered wagon . His parents, Joshua and Louisa Durbin, soon developed large farming interest in eastern Mills county and their farm home was famed for its hospitality in those early days. Mr. Durbin continued the occupation of farming as he grew to manhood. He possessed sound business judgment and expanded his land holding not only in this area, but in other sections of the county as well. Their large country home is one of the county's finest today and is on the old home farm. On February 19, 1903, he was married to Maggie M. Sturgeon of Emerson. The Durbins had one son, Frank, who was associated with him in farming. Mr.. Durbin is survived by his wife, his son, and three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Baer and Mrs. R. L. Hale of Malvern, and other relatives and many friends. The services Wednesday were in charge of the Gomer Funeral Home. Serving as pall bearers were Ivan Durbin, Hadley Parker, Harry Clark, Harold Smith, A. J. McGinnis, Frank Cole, R. L. Grayson, and Hobart Hampton. Music was furnished by Mrs. Mable Honeyman. Mrs. Anna Salmons and Mrs. Walter fisher cared for the flowers. Burial was in the Emerson Cemetery. Malvern Leader, November 4, 1948, page 1
