Read More	THE PASSING OF IVAN DURBIN Life Long Citizen of Mills County Dies at Home in Malvern May 19th, Iran Durbin, fifty-six years a resident of Mills County, passed away at his home In Malvern Thursday, just afternoon, following five weeks of intense suffering from an internal cancer. Mr. Durbin had been about his usual health during the past winter, and since Mrs. Durbin's accident last fall had kept pretty close at home assisting In her care. A couple of months ago however he began to suffer at times from pains in his back, and five weeks ago he went to a specialist in Omaha and was operated on at the Wise Memorial Hospital. The operation disclosed a well developed cancer on the pancreas, so far developed in fact that nothing curative could be done for it and it was known that his time was short at best. He wanted to come home; so an ambulance was sent for him and he came home two weeks ago. From that time on his decline was rapid and he passed as above stated on May 19. Although his suffering at times were intense, he bore it all bravely and uncomplainingly, always mindful of the comfort of those around him. Funeral services were held from the late home, Saturday afternoon conducted by District Supt. M. A. Gable, of Council Bluffs, a long time friend, assisted by Rev. Paul H. Hicks, of the Malvern M. E. Church. Mrs. F. R. Chantry and Mrs. L. A. Talbott sang "Rock of Ages." Beautiful flowers in great profusion testified to the loving remembrance of friends and relatives. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends, many coming from Emerson, Hastings, and Strahan. Interment was made in the Malvern Cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. J. O. Laird, L. A. Talbott, H. A. Galliher, E. C. Collins, R. W. Criswell, F. R. Chantry, W. P. Wortman, and G. S. Escrett. The following obituary was given: Ivan Durbin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Durbin was born in Johnson County, Iowa, November 5, 1869 and passed away at his home in Malvern, May 19, 1927. At the age of two years, he moved with his parents to Mills County, locating on the old Durbin homestead southwest of Emerson. Here he grew to manhood, taking part in the general work of the farm, attending the local schools, and later attending Western Normal College. he was united in marriage with Miss Eva V. Dolph, March 25, 1891, and they at once begun housekeeping on a farm near the old home, later moving to a farm that became their home farm where they spent many happy years. To them were born two children, Orville, now living on the home farm, and Mrs. Ruth Crozier of Ottumwa, who with the loving wife, survive him, and were with him to minister unto him during his last hours. He is also survived by two grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters, besides a host of friends who join with the family in deep sorrow over his passing. Ivan Durbin was one of Mills County's best citizens. He was a true and loyal friend, a devoted husband and father and an honest, upright, dependable man whose integrity was never questioned and whose help was never withheld from any good enterprise for the welfare of the community and country. His life's business was farming and in this he was a marked success. There was no better kept, more carefully planned and operated farm in the county than the Durbin farm. He made it a life study and kept abreast with every movement advancing the farming interests. His advice on farming matters was frequently sought and always cheerfully and conscientiously given. His home life was ideal. He loved his family with a deep devotion that never lessened. His care for his invalid wife was ever uppermost in his mind. Even in his last illness he seemed more greatly concerned over her condition than his own and told the surgeon at the hospital that he must get home on her account. His tender solicitude was noted throughout all their married life. His first and last thoughts were for her whom he had taken "for better or worse" even to the end. His love for his children, too, was paramount and in his little grandchildren he took the keenest delight and pleasure in all that interest them. He was ever thoughtful of those around him and concerned in the welfare and condition of those less fortunate than himself. The least and the most we can say of him is "He was a good man."
