(Jim) Naysmith, son of William and Melsena Lively Naysmith, was born on November 9, 1892 in Republic County, KS, and passed away on January 8, 1987 at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE, at the age of 94 years, one month and 29 days. He lived on the farm three miles east of Byron, the place now inhabited by Ken Naysmith and family, one fourth mile into Republic County, KS. (Jim) Naysmith, son of William and Melsena Lively Naysmith, was born on November 9, 1892 in Republic County, KS, and passed away on January 8, 1987 at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE, at the age of 94 years, one month and 29 days. He lived on the farm three miles east of Byron, the place now inhabited by Ken Naysmith and family, one fourth mile into Republic County, KS. He received his education in the Ash Grove Rural School, in Republic Co. Kansas. He started farming with his father, but was drafted and served in the armed forces during World War I. Many in his battalion were killed, but Jim never received an injury. He served as a machine gunner until the war was over, and had to serve another six months in the Occupation Army. He was anxious to get home as farming was his biggest joy. He was united in marriage to Viola Masten on December 23, 1923. They lived on the farm formerly occupied by Jim's folks until they retired and moved to their new home in Chester. Hazel Hoops, a sister-in-law of Jim's, as well as Kenneth and his family, took care of him for many years before he was taken to the nursing home. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chester all of his life. Jim was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Baker-Holmes Post No. 3722, Belleville, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Viola and one brother, Vernon. He is survived by four sisters, Gladys Bodholdt and Avis Strawhun of Yuba City, CA, Velma Bohning of Harrold, S.D., and Eavon Holmes of Nipomo, CA; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church of Chester, NE, on Sunday, Jan. 11, 1987 at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the Reverend Russell Terman. Kenneth Hoge was soloist and Mrs. Dolan Frye, organist. Casket bearers were J.F. Young Jr., Adolph Firley, Lee Hoops, Paul Handley, Dean Russell and Chris Frye. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by the Baker-Holmes Post No. 3722 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Belleville, KS.
