He was married in Clinton county, Ohio to Sarah Clark who was born in Loudon county, Virginia, December 23, 1802. She came to Ohio when she was a young girl. After raising their large family in Ohio, James and Sarah came to Kansas...following the Civil War and James took a homestead twelve miles west of Independence in Montgomery county. Several of their children came to Kansas at the same time. There they had a part in the improvement and progress of their community. James was one of those instrumental in the founding and building of the Friends church in Independence, Kansas. Those who came with their parents were Lucetta Simmons, Ruth Hockett, Wilkerson Thompson, John B., and their families, and Sallie Ann Chapman. Lucetta and her family later went to California and John went to Wichita in Sedgwick county. The rest remained near Independence. Elihu and Mary Moon had come to Kansas in the spring of 1858 after spending the winter in Missouri and a year in Iowa, and settled in Riley county. Jane and James Stevens came to Riley county in 1868 and lived near Elihu. James Valentine and his family came from Minnesota in the winter of 1866-67 and homesteaded near Erie in Neosho county which corners Montgomery county. One incident of their trip was losing their cookstove as they crossed a river on the ice. William Clark went to Iowa to make his home and Joseph Henry spent his later years in Kentucky and Mississippi. Rhoda Hockett, Elizabeth Sircoulomb, Daniel and Josiah all remained in Ohio, or at least spent most of their years there. Sallie Ann stayed with her parents in their home until her death in 1874. Elihu then went to Montgomery county and brought his father and mother to his home in Riley county where he and Mary cared for them. James died January 17, 1888 and Sarah died March 29, 1892. They were buried in the May Day cemetery near their last home. Joseph MOON, QUAKER, born on Broad River in S.C. The head of family before Revolutionary War. Prior to moving west lived several years in N.C. and Tenn. In 1809 collected his son’s families, herds and flocks and crossing the Cumberland Mountains, he settled where Martinsville now stands. The father of 10 sons and 2 daus. settling in close cluster. One son, Wm. had 24 children by two wives. When he died at 84 years, he had 384 living descendants. James MOON the grandson of Joseph Moon at age 68 years is father of 14 children living. A wife, 8 sons and 6 daus. His 7 sons and 3 son-in-laws were soldiers of Civil War, all returned home safely. Some History, by Isaac Clark Moon (November, 1951): In October, 1871, my father and mother and my younger sister, Mary, and I made a trip across Kansas in a farm wagon drawn by a team of horses, to Montgomery County, a few miles west of Independence, to visit my grandfather and grandmother Moon and a few of their sons and daughters and their families, who had come there from Ohio a few years before... Late in the fall of 1884, I was called to my old home on the farm near May Day to take care of the stock and attend to the work on the farm while my father was gone to Montgomery County to look after his father and mother. When father returned from Montgomery County in January, 1885, he brought his father and mother, James and Sarah Moon with him and they remained with him as long as they lived. Grandfather died January 17, 1888, at the age of 86. Grandmother died March 29, 1892 at the age of 89 years. They were both buried in the May Day cemetery.
