The following is his obituary published in the Index Journal:: WARE SHOALS — James Howard “Slick” Drake, 85, husband of Margaret Dunn Drake of 45 Smith St., died Monday at Self Regional Healthcare. He was born January 2, 1917 at Shoals Junction in Greenwood County, a son of the late James Will Drake and the late Ida McClain Drake Murff. Mr. Drake was a member of The First Baptist Church where he had served as deacon and as chairman of that board, Sunday School teacher, choir member and officer of Baptist Training Union. Mr. Drake began his military career as an enlisted man with the Thirtieth Division in which he earned a battlefield commission on March 24, 1945. He participated in five campaigns with this division earning the Bronze Star medal. He was released from Federal service as a first lieutenant, Infantry on October 11, 1945. After a brief membership in the Officers Reserve Corps, he was appointed a first lieutenant, Infantry in the South Carolina Army National Guard on May 20, 1947 and was promoted to the grade of Captain. Mr. Drake played a key role in organizing a National Guard unit in Ware Shoals. On May 20, 1947, Company “I”, 3rd Battalion, 218th Infantry, South Carolina National Guard was activated with two officers and twenty-seven enlisted men. Captain Drake assumed command of the unit on May 27, 1949 and commanded the unit until April 13, 1962. During Captain Drake’s command, the company won the Pershing Trophy one year, the National Guard Trophy two years, the Eisenhower Trophy three years, and the National Guard Community Service Award seven years. A total of five members of the unit won Guardsmen of the Year Award. In 1962, Captain Drake retired from the S.C. Army National Guard and was promoted to the grade of Major and became a member of the United States Army Reserve. Mr. Drake also served the community including Ware Shoals Welfare Committee, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross Blood Drive, March of Dimes, Crusade for Freedom, Emergency Polio Drive, Christmas Fund for the Needy, Christmas Parades and Military Funerals. On November 2, 1997, then Governor David Beasley presented Mr. Drake with the Order of the Palmetto recognizing his outstanding contributions to Community, State and Nation. Survivors are: his wife, Margaret, who resides at The Maples, Honea Path; three sons, Jim Drake, Duncan; Ken Drake, Baton Rouge, La.; and Bob Drake, Ware Shoals; six grandchildren, Brad, Will, Jason, Alyson, Maggie and Mary Elizabeth. Three brothers, Judge Ralph Drake, Greenville; Fred Murff, Columbia; and Nick Murff, Aiken. Two sisters, Cecil Gable, Greenwood and Genie Latimer, Due West. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 PM at The First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Jones, Rev. Dan Compton and Mr. Dan Branyon officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Shoals Junction. Members and former members of the National Guard will serve as active and honorary pallbearers. The family is at the home, 45 Smith St. and will receive friends at The First Baptist Church Wednesday 1-3 PM. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Music Fund or Building Fund, P.O. Box 449, Ware Shoals, SC 29692. Parker-White Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
