Leggott, age 79, passed away March 10, 2000 at Lincoln Bryan Memorial Hospital. He was born April 21, 1920 at Clinton, Illinois to James and Susan Elbert Leggott. He attended schools in Illinois through ninth grade and moved with eight brothers and sisters and his parents to Elwood in 1935. He graduated from Elwood High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 14th Armored Division. On June 17, 1943, he was united in marriage to Maxine Smith in Fort Smith, Arkansas. After returning home from the service, he and Maxine made their home on a farm near Elwood, farming until 1948 when they moved to Elwood. He and his wife began operation of the Leggott Plumbing Shop in 1950 which several years later became Leggott Plumbing and Hardware. The business consisted of plumbing and pipeline contracting of water, sewer and gas lines throughout the area. They retired in 1993. James was dedicated to the community of Elwood throughout his life. He was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as Deacon and was active in all areas of church work. He was chairman of the building committee when the church was remodeled. He was a member of the American Legion Post #290, Past President of Chamber of Commerce, served as Chief of the Elwood Fire Department, and served as a member of the Elwood School Board in 1981. James received the honor of Businessman of the Year. He was a charter member of the Lakeside County Club, had coached Little League baseball and was a Boy Scout leader. James was a longtime member of the West Drivein Coffee Club. James and Maxine were also charter members of the Friday night "Dallas" group. While attending Elwood High School, James was an accomplished athlete. He played an undefeated conference football team in the fall of 1937, and on a state tournement qualifying basketball team in 1938. He later enjoyed following his three sons' sports activities as well as the next generation. As an avid Cornhusker fan, he and his wife have been season ticketholders for almost 40 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Leggott. He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Elwood; three sons: Jim (Kathy) Leggott of Elwood; Gregg Leggott of Denver, CO; Rick (Anita) Leggott of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren: Lyndsay, J.D., Greggory and Jeffery; five sisters: Evelyn Puls of Elwood, Eldora (Frank) Synovec of Lincoln, Anna Mae Wade of Elwood, Alice Jean (Dal) Dreher of Elwood, Doris (Ed) Saulsbury of North Platte; two brothers: Sherle (Beth) Leggott and Donnie (Alice) Leggott both of Elwood; one brother-in-law: Gary (Sharon) Smith of Lincoln and many nieces, nephews and numberous friends. Services were held March 14, 2000 at the First Christian Church at Elwood with Reverend Ginny Hill officiating. Burial was in the Elwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his memory. Berryman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
