Mahon Mr. and Mrs. George Mahon of Lawrence township suffered a severe loss last week in the death of their son, James J. Mahon. this young man, loved by all for his qualities of heart and mind, was born in said township, November 9, 1881. Possessed of talent and determination, James Mahon through his industry and strict attention for duty, rose rapidly in the line of action he had chosen for himself. He began his career by teaching school, then he attended the Concordia Business College and perfected himself in stenography. In 1905 he entered the government War Department service at Oklahoma City. Owing to his superior merits, in 1906 he was transferred to Washington, D. C. To pave the way for future promotion the authorities directed him to enter the Post Office Department in which branch he found ample opportunities to display his executive abilities. In 1910, he married Miss Xenia Cook of Washington, D. C., an estimable young lady who proved herself to be a loving and devoted wife. But alas! In the midst of his activities and usefulness, whilst the light of a bright future seemed to dawn upon him, the germ of an insidious disease began to undermine the strength of a vigorous constitution. All that medical skill could do, or love devise was not able to stay the progress of an enemy on whose banners are inscribed the words, “White Plague.” His friends in Washington and his relatives in Kansas left nothing undone to snatch a young life from the claws of a relentless malady. In 1914 he was advised to go to Colorado in the hope that its beneficial climate might give him back health and vigor. Twas decreed above that this should not be the case. The poor sufferer began gradually to sink and finally closed his eyes in peace surrounded by his parents and soring wife. James Mahon lived long enough to obtain a crown for himself in the great hereafter, but all too short for those who were dear and near to his heart. If it be true, that in the brief span of time allowed to mortal man, yesterday is but a dream, tomorrow is only a vision, this pilgrim of eternity exemplified in his life that today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. That God may give him eternal rest and that light perpetual may shine upon his soul in the prayer of a weeping father and mother, of a widowed wife, of brother and sisters, of friends and acquaintances whose brows are now contracted in sorrow and Christian grief. The funeral was held from the St. John’s Church at Clyde Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Father Ennis officiating at the melancholy rites. The Voice extends their sympathy to those bereaved.
