Description	:	James Joseph Russell married twice and lived in Loudoun Co VA. He served as a Sergeant in Col. William Russell's 13th Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War. 1st marriage was on 18 Apr 1775 to Sarah 'Sallie' Osborn b.ca. 1755 PA d. 1795 Loudoun Co VA, with whom he had seven* children. Samuel Neer. James Russell purchased land from Ferdinando Fairfax (then owner of the Northern Neck) around 1803 around the time he married his 2nd wife Ann Nancy Heath. He purchased 131 acre parcel of land in the valley that would have been considered farmable. Then he purchased a woodlot of 18 acres directly behind the first parcel on a steeper section. This excerpt from book attests to his burial. He married 2nd wife Ann Nancy Heath in 1803: p. 13: "James and his second wife Nancy Heath raised all nineteen children on the Russell homestead estate near Harpers Ferry and James died December 12, 1831. A limestone slab marks the site of burial on this farm. During the Civil War troops were encamped on the farm and all of the buildings except the house were destroyed." Edwin Russell, ca. 1925 James, at the breaking out of the war of the revolution, joined the Continental army at the age of 19 and served 7 years. He was at the siege and fall of Yorktown and surrender of Cornwallis, was in the battle of Guilford. The records show that he was a sergeant in the 13th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Russell. On his return home he married Sarah Osborn, an English lady by whom he had seven children. She died. He then married Nancy Heath. They had twelve children. He retained the old homestead estate where he lived all his days and raised his numerous family of 19 children. He was born in 1754 and died December 12, 1831. Citation: History of Adair, Sullivan, Putnam and Schuyler Counties MO Vol 2 1888 pg 887 Jonathan Russell is the youngest child of a family of thirteen born to James and Ann (Heath) Russell, natives of Loudon Co VA, where they passed their entire lives, dying at the ages of 75 and 83, respectively. The father was a farmer by occupation, and served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In politics he was a Whig. Previous to his marriage with the mother of our subject, he had wedded Sallie Osborn, by whom he had eight children. Decatur, Ill, Jan 23-(Special)-Mrs. Jane Ann Russell McCoy, 96 years of age, one of the few remaining real Daughters of the Americna Revolution in America, died Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the home of her nephew, E.B. Smith, in Oakley. Her death came thru advanced age and failing health that has been marked in the past few months. It followed a week's serious illness. Mrs. McCoy was born March 25, 1820,Loudoun county, Virginia, a mile south of Harper's Ferry. her father, James Russell,served six months in the revolutionary war and was the survivor of many historic engagements, among them the battle of Yorktown. She was the nineteenth child born to his two unions, and was 11 years old at the time of his death. Last Will and Testament Will, Loudoun County, VA, Feb 1832, Vol. T, p. 392; In the name of God Amen: I James Russell of the County of Loudoun and State of Virginia being sound in mind & memory revoking and annuling all and every other will heretofore made by me do hereby make constitute appoint and ordain this to be my last will and testament. In the first place it is my will and I do hereby direct and require that my estate both real & personal shall be kept together during the life of my dearly beloved wife or as long after my death as my said wife shall remain alive and unmarried under the direction of my executors herein after named and that no part of my said personal estate shall be sold so long as my said wife shall remain alive and unmarried except so much thereof shall be necessary to discharge all my debts and funeral expenses but that such part of my stock and personal property as shall be necessary therefor shall be kept upon the land subject to the order and control of my said executors by them to be used in farming the land for the use and benefit of my said wife and my children. It is my will that my land is farmed as before mentioned under the direction of my said executors and that the profits arising there from be applied first to the support and maintenance of my wife and to the education and maintenance of my children and the surplus if any there be shall be dispensed of in the manner herein after directed that is to say it shall be divided equally among all my children if my said wife should marry then it is my will that all my personal estate be sold and distributed in the manner before mentioned except so much thereof as the law allows her which together with that portion of the land allowed her by law shall be laid off for her by commissioners appointed by the Court and all the rest and residue of my estate shall descend to all my children. But if my said wife should live either single or unmarried until my youngest child shall be of the age of twenty one years then it is my will that all my property shall descend generally and be equally divided among all my children except the dower of my said wife, which shall also descend in the same manner at her death. It is also my will that the children of my daughter Hannah Neer shall be entitled to the same portion of my said estate that their mother would have bean entitled were she now living. And if any of my children after they have attained the age of twenty one years shall remain or on the farm under the direction of my executors and assist in the management it is my will that they shall be allowed a reasonable fair compensation. For the purpose of carrying into effect my wishes in this behalf, I name and approve Christian Niswanger and Samuel Russell the executors of this my last will and testament of whom is my wish that no security should be required but they should enter into a bond in such penalty as the court shall direct the the condition of which shall be discharged by the faithful performance of their duties in their behalf. It is to be understood the profits of my lands & stock while kept together as directed in the first part of this will are to be applied to the maintenance and support of daughters while unmarried & and sons under the age of twenty one, this clause being only declaritory of my intention in the other. My note: The' Hillsborough and Harpers Ferry Turnpike' reached Harpers Ferry in 1852 and ran along the base of Loudoun Heights with a toll house on the other side of the river. James Joseph Russell and Ann Nancy (Heath) Russell built what descendants refer to as the 'old stone house', which was held in the family for several generations. The old stone house went from them to son Joseph Louis Russell, then to his son James Lewis Russell and Annie Virginia Edwards, then to their daughter Daisy May (Russell) Wiles when it finally sold out of the family.
