Description	:	James is a native of Kentucky, born in 1838, and was reared on a farm, where he learned to love and understand the works of nature. Read More	James is a native of Kentucky, born in 1838, and was reared on a farm, where he learned to love and understand the works of nature. During his youth he engaged in farming, but gradually turned his attention more and more to the nursery business. When the Civil war came on he enlisted in the Home Guards, but saw little service, and when peace was declared went happily and contentedly back to the cultivation of his plants, his shrubs and his trees. In 1878 he came to Chanute as a pioneer, having become impressed with the possibilities of this region, and not long thereafter founded the Chanute Nurseries. His start was a small one, if compared with business enterprises of the present day, but through persistent labor and with the help of his growing sons he built it up to large proportions, and the business became recognized as one of the city's regular institutions and one which contributed to Chanute's prestige. Mr. Truitt passed away at Chanute in February, 1914, universally respected and esteemed, a man whose life among the growing things had put his heart into attune with nature's best moods and had developed his natural qualities of sympathy and kindliness. Mr. Truitt was a stanch republican, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was married in Kentucky to Miss Ella E. Griece, who was born in 1842, in Ohio, and who survives her husband and resides at Chanute. They became the parents of five children, as follows: a son who died in infancy; William, who was associated with his father and brothers in the nursery business and died at Chanute in March, 1914; May, who conducts the greenhouse at No. 219 North Steuben Avenue, the only one in Chanute, where there are 35,000 square feet of glass; Walter, a resident of Chanute, who was formerly connected with the nursery business with his father and brothers; and Guy E. ***************************************************** Chanute Daily Tribune, Jan 28, 1914, Page 1 Jas. Truitt Dies In River Body Found Not Far From The East Bridge Founder of Big Greenhouse and Nursery No arrangements for the funeral made today He was 79 years old and came to Chanute from Kentucky in 1878, Starting Institution Which Developed Into Largest of Kind in Southeast Kansas James Truitt was drowned this morning in the Neosho River. His body was found about 10:30 o'clock just below the east river bridge. It was estimated he had been in the water nearly an hour. A man named Emery, a wood chopper, as he was crossing the bridge, saw a hat weighted down with a brick. It was near the west end and on the south side of the bridge. Inside the hat was the following note, written in pencil. "My dear May has done her duty like a little lady. I freely lay down my life to save my dear boy. If we had decent government they would take Walter away and cure him. I prayed to God for years for relief. "With malice toward none I bid you all farewell forever. "James Truitt," The men at the city water plant had seen Mr. Truitt walking down the road from town after 9 o'clock. Bert Manley thinks perhaps it was as late as 9:30. It was nearly 10 o'clock when Mr. Emery discovered the hat and the note. The alarm was telephoned to town immediately and then those at the power plant began a search for the body. Help soon arrived from town and about 10:30 the body was located fifty feet below the bridge and about twenty feet from the west bank. It was in eight or ten feet of water. Coroner R. A. Light, who was a member of the party which recovered the body, does not believe Mr. Truitt jumped from the bridge but thinks that he dived into the water from the west edge of the stream. He came to Chanute from Kentucky in 1876 and started as a fruit grower, renting eleven acres in the south part of the city from A. S. Lapham, where he made the first practical demonstration that strawberries and other small fruits could be grown successfully in this vicinity. Two years later Mr Truitt moved to the present home the family in the Second Ward where he became the owner of a 25-acre tract which has since been platted into town lots and now forms three well-settled additions. Mr. Truitt at first confined himself to the nursery business, but in 1883 started a greenhouse that has from its very beginning been a popular feature and has grown in size until it now has a total area of more than 10,000 feet of glass. The firm also owns a packing and shipping plant, 110 by 220 feet, at the head of North Lincoln Avenue, and a propagating plant of 200 acres southwest of the city. In 1893 Mr Truitt took his sons, William and Walter, into partnership with him and the firm name since that time has been James Truitt & Sons. A few years ago, Guy, the other son, joined the firm and almost a year ago the daughter, Miss May Truitt, entered the work, after having been a successful primary teacher in the city schools for many years. Rev J R McFadden, pastor of the Methodist church, spoke with feeling of the life that Mr Truitt had led of his occupation as florist and nurseryman and of the enjoyment he found in striving for beauty and perfection---and applied this to his career as a business man and a citizen. -------------------------
