Underwood Berryton - James L. "Jim" Underwood, 67, rural Berryton, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1989, at a Topeka hospital, where he had been readmitted Monday. Mr. Underwood was a self-employed home builder for many years in the Berryton and Watson areas before he retired in 1985. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He served in the 754th Bombardment Squadron and participated in the air offensive in Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and in anti-submarine combat. He served 21 months overseas and was discharged at the rank of sergeant on Sept. 12, 1945. Mr. Underwood played American Legion baseball as a youth and was a member of the Topeka All-Star Team in 1936 or 1937 that won the state tournament, played in Pueblo, Colo., then in the Little World Series in Stockton, Calif., where they lost to Omaha, Neb. He was born March 18, 1922, in Fergus Falls, Minn., the son of Thomas W. Underwood Sr. and Grace M. Roudybush Underwood. He came from Minnesota to Topeka in 1923 and was graduated from Topeka High School. He moved to Berryton in 1940 and had lived there since. He attended the Kansas State College of Agriculture in Manhattan before he entered the service on Oct. 30, 1942. Mr. Underwood was a member of the United Methodist Church in Berryton, Anderson-Raible Post No. 239 of the American Legion in Overbrook and Shawnee County Chapter No. 2367 of the American Association of Retired Persons. He was married to Betty L. Saffell on Sept. 13, 1942, in Berryton. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sallie M. Thompson, Shawnee; his mother, Grace M. Underwood, rural Topeka; a brother, Tom W. Underwood Jr., Berryton; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lynn Creek Cemetery near Berryton. Mr. Underwood will lie in state from 9 a.m. today until 11:30 a.m. Friday at Tibbitts-Griffin Funeral Chapel, 29th and Tecumseh Road, where family and friends will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The casket will be open at the church from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 7010 S.W. Berryton Road, Berryton 66409, or to Topeka Hospice Inc., 8243 S.W.
