Not quite sure how or if these discrepancies will be clarified. ------------------ Fairfield Ledger Wednesday May 20, 1920 James L. Freeman J. L. Freeman, well known resident of Fairfield, passed away Wednesday evening at 6:15 o'clock, at his home at 601 East Lowe street. Although Mr. Freeman had not enjoyed good health for over a year, his illness was not of a critical condition, being stricken seriously Wednesday afternoon, death soon following. Funeral services were held from the residence Friday afternoon (sic. ???) at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. H. Polly of the Christian church. Interment in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Freeman had been a resident of this city for a number of years. He was aged seventy-eight years and is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. James Laton Freeman was born in Champaign county, Illinois, August 15, 1841 and departed this life at his home in Fairfield, Iowa, Wednesday, May 19, 1920 (sic), aged 78 years, 9 monght and 4 days. Mr. Freeman had been in poor health for the past two years, yet continued to be up and around until the day of his death. Mr. Freeman grew to manhood in Champaign county, Ill., where he answered the call of his country in 1861 and served during the duration of the war in Co. F, 26 Illinois. Returning home he was united in marriage with Mary F. Stearns, October 26, 1865. To this union were born ten children, four of whom preceded the father in death. The six living are: Mrs. Arthur Morrow, Eldon; Mrs. Harrison Peters, St. Joseph, Ill.; Mrs. Frank Sawvillian (sic), Drakeville, Ia.; Louis, Ottumwa; Mrs. Harry Higby, Des Moines and Ezra C. at home. Mr. Freeman moved to Iowa in the spring of 1898 and lived on a farm until 1910, when he came to Fairfield. When a young man Mr. Freeman united with the Christian church and died trusting in the Christ for life eternal. His wife and children mourn his departure, but rejoice in the memory of one who was kind, loving and true.
