Description	:	An old Ransom County settler died September 22, 1921 in Lisbon. He was born on April 25, 1852 in Franktown, Ontario, Canada, to Patrick and Johanna (Powers) Madigan. James was baptized at the age of 4 weeks on May 27, 1852, in Perth, Ontario, Canada at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. He was born on April 25, 1852 in Franktown, Ontario, Canada, to Patrick and Johanna (Powers) Madigan. James was baptized at the age of 4 weeks on May 27, 1852, in Perth, Ontario, Canada at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. In March 1879 James came through Port Huron, Michigan to settle in the Dakota Territory. The following year his parents, brothers, and sisters immigrated to the United States. James and his father, Patrick, rode from Mapleton over the prairie seventy-five miles with an ox team to take up a claim which was part of the renowned Griswold Mine in Fort Ransom Indian Reservation area. In 1883 he settled permanently in Springer Township where he became a good, practical farmer where he raised grain on his land. James became a naturalized citizen of the United States on October 3, 1890 in Lisbon, Ransom County District Court. James never married. He is survived by brothers, Dennis of Lisbon, John of Plymouth; sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Simpson of Pocatello, Idaho, Mrs. Ellen Kidd of Whiteson, Oregon, and Mrs. Catherine Roach of Lisbon. He was buried at the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery.
