(The Billings Gazette - Billings, Montana - Mon., Feb, 20, 1933, pg. 5, col.) ============================================================================== JOHN MADIGAN DIES IN MONTANA John Madigan, pioneer of Ransom County and well known and beloved character, died February 17th, near Columbus, Montana, where he was staying with relatives for the past few months. Funeral services were held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in the City on Monday forenoon and internment made in St Aloysius Catholic Cemetery. He was baptized on August 5, 1854, at 9 weeks old, at St. John the Baptist in Perth, Ontario, Canada. Deceased who was around 79 years old was born in Franktown, Ontario, Canada, where he grew up to manhood. He came to North Dakota in 1880 and took a claim near what was Old Plymouth on the Sheyenne River northwest of Lisbon. Here he erected a log house in which he made his home until four or five years ago when he retired and moved to Lisbon making his home with his sister, Mrs. Ed Roach, until her death several months ago. Jack, as he was familiarly known was of a most amiable disposition, well endowed with that Irish wit, that is so winning. He used to love to tell of the famous gold rush, and his experiences were many and interesting. He will be missed by a host of friends. Mr. Madigan never married. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. David Simpson, at Pocatello, Idaho, and a number of nieces and nephews. Two brothers, James and Dennis Madigan, and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Kidd, and Mrs. Ed Roach preceded him in death. (Ransom County Gazette, Feb. 1933)
