Read More	Penwell, James Miller 1849 - 1934 PIONEER CITIZEN OF VILLISCA DIES AT DAUGHTER’S HOME James Miller Penwell, 84, a resident of this vicinity for 80 years, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wesley Shum, in Clarinda, where he and Mrs. Penwell had spent the winter. His body was brought here Sunday evening to the Wolfe & Gourley Funeral Chapel where it remained until the hour of the funeral. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Villisca Methodist Church and were conducted by Rev. W. F. Clayburg. Singing was by H. C. Lindell, Richard Runyan, Mrs. A. F. Davie, Mrs. Harry Tyler. Sic grandsons served as pall bearers. Burial was made in the Villisca Cemetery. Mr. Penwell was born December 15, 1849 near Hillsboro, Ohio, a son of Aaron and Mary Penwell He came to Villisca, then known as The Forks, at the age of 4 years with his parents, making the trip with an ox team and a prairie schooner. They were among the very first arrivals in this vicinity and found the country a frontier wilderness. Mr. Penwell lived the remainder of the life in this immediate vicinity and witnessed many changes in the community during his lifetime. On June 29, 1871 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Erkenbrack at the home of the bride’s parents near Villisca. They began housekeeping in a one room pioneer home near here and continued to farm for may years. They became parents of eleven children, of whom ten survive the father. The living children are Bert Penwell, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mrs. Cora Elrick, Mrs. Amy Upp, and Ben Penwell, all of Carpenter, Wyoming; Mrs. Maggie Villers, Colville, Washington; Mrs. Allie Day, Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. Dilla Shum, Clarinda, and William, Dave, and Clarence Penwell al of this vicinity. One daughter, Mary died February 14, 1906. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Penwell is survived by a large number of grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
