Description	:	James M. "Bud" Appley, 91, of rural Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Dawn Quame will officiate. Burial with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. James Milton Appley was born to Joseph Milton and Martha (Mattie) Telford Appley on December 1, 1918 on a farm near Akron, Iowa. He was raised in Union County, South Dakota during the depression where he attended country school at Pleasant Ridge #19. Following his schooling, he began farming using horses but later became one of the first farmers to mechanize in Union County. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1942 and joined the 2nd Marine Division in New Zealand in 1943. While serving there he met and fell in love with his future wife Betty Rose Weatherall. He fought with his fellow marines on Tarwa, Saipan, Tinyan, Okinawa and back to Saipan. He volunteered to go into Japan with the first troops after the bombs where he was involved in clean up of the bomb area. He returned to the U.S. on Christmas Eve 1945 landing in San Diego and was discharged from the Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago on Feb. 12, 1946. Upon returning to the states, he resumed farming such crops as corn, oats and alfalfa in Union County, South Dakota. Betty arrived in September and they were married on September 19,1946 at Reno, Nevada. In addition to crops he raised cattle, hogs, chickens and sheep for many years. At the age of 62, they retired from full time farming but continued to live in Union County. He and Betty enjoyed wintering in first in Arizona and later in Texas where they spent 25 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. He was also a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion 186 in Akron where he was a past Post Commander. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star Vesper Chapter #61. Immediate survivors include his wife, Betty, of over 63 years and his 8 children: Kurt Appley (Nancy) of rural Akron, Lynda Hicks (Dr. William) of Sibley, IA, Cynthia Hayes (James) of rural Akron, Dave Appley (Valerie) of rural Akron, Dan Appley (Cindy) of rural Akron, Wendy Thornburg (Burke) of Tigard, OR, Dr. Shirley Weldon (Charles) of Tulsa, OK, and Dr. Becky Boesch (John) of Washougal, WA. He also is survived by 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a sister, Martha Mae Anderson of Akron as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Venita Utesch and Velma Heeren. Bud, as he was affectionately known by his friends and family, loved fun whether it was through playing cards or cracking jokes He was known for his characteristic smile. He also had a deep love for the land and could often be seen going for early morning drives in the hopes of seeing bluebirds or other wildlife. He was a wonderful husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
