The middle name was "Ralph" per the headstone inscription and the Fairfield Daily Ledger funeral story published on May 13, 1924. The first obituary story published on May 12th evidently used "Ross" for the middle name, so it is now assumed that was an error corrected the following day. Initially, no obituary was found for James when this memorial was first entered, using the DOD of May 14, 1924 per Evergreen cemetery transcriptions. As it turns out, that was when James was buried, not when he died. Sometimes deaths that take place out of the Fairfield/Jefferson county, Iowa area are not sourced well because of the lack of a death record. Presumably someone assumed that James died and was buried on the same date (which sometimes does happen, of course). When asked to find an obituary for James, this contributor on November 3, 2014 looked in the microfilm records at the Fairfield Library and searched just prior to the May 14th date, finding the stories as transcribed below. ------------ Fairfield Daily Ledger Monday, May 12, 1924 Pg. 2 Col. 6 & 7 J. ROSS STEPHENSON DIED THIS MORNING Word was received here this morning by relatives of the death of J. Ross Stephenson (sic. middle name was Ralph) at Independence, Iowa. He was born November 8, 1868 (sic. 1867 per headstone inscription) and died this a.m. at 7:20 at a hospital there. He lived here for a number of years and was quite well known. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Stephenson. Death was caused by apoplexy. Mr. Stephenson had been employed by the Iowa Telephone Co., but had to give up work last August due to ill health. Two brothers, John W. Stephenson of this city and Dr. R. B. Stephenson of Libertyville and one sister, Mrs. Oscar Boltz also of this city are left to mourn his death. The body will be brought here for burial. Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. Oscar Boltz, 805 West Broadway, late Tuesday afternoon. The Masons will have charge at the cemetery. ------------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Tuesday May 13, 1924 Pg. 1 Col. 3 J.R. STEPHENSON FUNERAL TOMORROW The funeral for J. Ralph Stephenson who died Monday at Independence, Iowa, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 oclock from the home of his sister Mrs. Oscar Boltz, 805 West Broadway in charge of Dr. H. Sears Thommson. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. The Masons will have charge at the grave.
