Cartwright, reside in this city and they with a number of friends from here attended the funeral, which was held from the Dixon home in Ogden at 11:00 o’clock Wednesday morning, burial in the Quincy cemetery. We hope to secure a complete obituary for our next issue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Boone County Democrat October 16, 1913 We have been handed for publication this week the following excellent sketch of the life and service of the late James Shaw, whose death at the home of his daughter in Ogden we chronicled last week. James Shaw was born in Ohio October 15, 1824, and departed this life at Ogden, Iowa, Sunday October 5, 1913, aged 88 years, 11 months and 20 days. When but a lad he came with his parents to Keokuk county, Iowa, and in 1845 removed to Mahaska county and settled near where the city of Oskaloosa is now located. There he met Miss Mary E. Gordon and on December 24, 1848, they were united in marriage. In the early spring of 1852 they immigrated to Boone county, this being the following year after the government concluded the treaty with the Sac, Fox and Sioux Indians. We remember hearing him recount the scene that took place at then Fort Des Moines. They homesteaded the old home place near Quincy church in Marcy township and lived there until 1905 when they moved to Ogden, where they resided until Jesus took him home. To them were born eleven children, two of whom died in infancy. Little Louisa died when eleven years old and Alden, the oldest son, died July 18, 1905. The remaining seven are Mrs. S.E. Dixon of Ogden, Mrs. H.H. Fisher of Moingona, Jerry Shaw of Perry, Henry Shaw of Winston, Missouri, Mrs. W.A. Cartwright of Boone, Ira S. Shaw of Boone and Mrs. Will Horn of Fort Dodge. They and a number of grandchildren, with their mother and grandmother, remain to mourn the loss of a loving and faithful husband and father and are given the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. In the early fifties he was converted and became a member of the United Brethren church. Shortly afterward the Quincy M.E. church was established and he became a member and remained so until his death. He was one of the first Sunday school superintendents and one of the old fashioned Methodist class leaders, a part in his Christian worship that he always enjoyed.
