The names of the living children (young and adult) may or may not always match up with other sources of family information, which can lead to various interpretations of family member names. ---------- Fairfield Tribune October 31, 1894 Pg. 2 Col. 1 The marriage of James Messick and Mrs. Maggie Cole (sic. she was not a "Mrs.", she was a "Miss") occurred Monday, October 29th. ---------- Jefferson County Republican July 5, 1901 Pg. 4, Col. 4 Comrade James W. Messick was 82 years old last Friday. When Co. E, 2d Iowa Infantry left Fairfield in 1861 he was the oldest man in the company. Very few of the boys are alive today and James is still here able to look after his garden. He has been married 53 years. If he is not already a good man, he ought to be since he has had so much time given to him. He has only 18 years to reach the century mark. Hope he may see it. ---------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday Jan. 29, 1908 Pg. 6 Col. 4 Another Pioneer Passed Away. James W. Messick died at his home in this city Monday, aged 88 years, 6 months and 29 days. He was born in Rockingham, Va., June 28th, 1819, learned the carpenter trade, and came to Fairfield in November of 1847, where he helped in the construction of some of the earliest residences. In 1848 he was married to Rebekah Haywood (sic), and four children by this marriage survive the parents. Mr. Messick was a veteran of the Mexican War, having served under Col. Curtis in the Second Ohio Infantry, and in 1861 enlisted for the Civil War under the same colonel, in Company E, Second Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to sergeant, served with his regiment for three years it was at the front, and for a year was chief of scouts. After the death of his wife, Mr. Messick was again married to Miss Arlinda M. Cole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Cole, in Fairfield, October 29th, 1894. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afteroon, conducted by Rev. G. W. Smith of the Baptist church, the members of the George Strong Post, G.A.R., attending in a body. Mr. Messick was a good soldier, a good citizen, and an honest, upright man, and there are many older citizens who will mourn with his wife and family because of his death. ---------- Fairfield Ledger Feb. 5, 1908 Pg. 6 Col. 4 RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT. 'Taps' was sounded by our great Commander January 27th, 1908, and our comrade, James W. Messick, responded to the call to join the large majority of his comrades in the great beyond. Comrade James W. Messick was a charter member of Company E, Second Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and did gallant service for his county in that famous regiment until the close of the was. He was one of the boys to whom was entrusted the beautiful silk flag presented to his company by the patriotic ladies of Fairfield, May 24th, 1861, charging them to take it, guard it well and not return it until victory was won. He followed that flag in the bloody battles of Fort Donaldson (sic), Shiloh, Corinth, Bear Creek, Atlanta, and then with Sherman to the sea, and took personal pride in seeing the flag returned untarnished, and ever afterwards saw to its care and preservation. In the death of Comrade Messick we have lost a comrade who was ever ready and willing to respond where duty called him, whether on the field of battle or as a good and patriotic citizen. We shall miss his kindly greeting and comradship (sic). Therefore be it RESOLVED, By George Strong Post No. 19, G.A.R., of Fairfield, Iowa, that we will ever cherish the memory of our departed comrade, James W. Messick, and we hereby extend to his widow and family our heartfelt sympathy and condolence in the loss of her husband and their father, and that these resolutions be recorded in the records of our post, and published in the city papers.
