Olive was born in Union Township in Clay County. She was the daughter of Stephen K. and Stella Drury Reed. Wesley came to Kansas with his parents, George H. and Laura Dare Braden, two brothers and one sister from Perry County, Illinois in 1912. This farm family came by the railroad bringing machinery and some livestock with them. They steeled near Wakefield, Kansas. Later two daughters, Goldie and Ruth were born at Wakefield. Wesley was the only one of the family who continued farming. Wesley and Olive had three sons, Duane R., Gailen R., and James D. Duane married Joyce Randle. They raised five children, Judy, Janet, Patricia, Roger and LeAnn. Gailen married Dixie Chapman and had four children: Jerry, Rick, Teresa and Dennis. James married Naomi Carlson and raised four children: Greg, Mike, Ladd and Amy. They later divorced and he married Margie Tidwell. Duane and Gailen farmed in the Wakefield community. James "Jim" left the farm and worked as a meat cutter in stores for a few years. He then went into the insurance business. In 1974, he was elected to the State Legislature and is now serving his eighth term. Gailen left the farm and became the Postmaster at the Wakefield Post Office. He retired in 1987, after serving thirty years as Postmaster. Duane farmed the William Avery farm for many years before moving to Wakefield in 1974. He died in 1980. Wesley died July 13, 1989. Olive presently lives in the Heritage Village Apartments. She has thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Submitted by Olive Braden. Contributor: Vernon (47248868) ------------ On 17 May 1922, Olive (Ollie) May Reed and her sister, Anna (Annie) Kathlene Reed, were married in a double ceremony. Olive married Wesley James Braden and Annie married Charlie Lawrence Vinzant. Wesley and Charlie were good friends. They were married in the home of the girls' parents, Stephen and Stella Reed, in their living room. In May of 1924, the two couples moved to Detroit, Michigan, where wages were far higher than most places and they felt their fortunes could be made. Initially, the two men worked for Goodyear Rubber making automobile tires. By the time of the 1930 census, Wesley and Ollie are in Republican Township, Clay Co., Kansas, where he is a farmer. Date they moved back to Kansas is unknown, but Charlie moved back to Kansas after the 25 Mar 1925 death of his wife, Annie. Contributor: Vernon (47248868)
