J. William Prater, 58, a native of Ellensburg and vice president of the Houghton Mifflin Publishing company of Boston since 1941, died in Boston yesterday. He had been with the publishing firm for a quarter of a century. Word of his death was received by relatives here and also was transmitted to the Record by the Associated Press.

A sister and brother, Mrs. Howard Barnice and Jess C. Prater of Ellensburg were enroute to Boston at the time of his death. They left by plane early Friday morning but had not arrived in Boston this morning.
