He was known by everybody in this part of the county and was a quiet unassuming citizen, beloved and respected by all. He visited his son in California on many occasions since the death of his wife, but always came back to the old Kansas home and neighbors for real enjoyment. A large congregation met at the home on Monday to attend the funeral services which were conducted by G.W. Brown, and his remains were followed by a large procession to the Cherokee cemetery where he was laid to rest beside his wife. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. lodge of this place and was buried under the auspices of that order. James Montee was born near Columbus, Ohio, July 25, 1832, and died at his home north of Cherokee, January 24, 1914, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 30 days. In 1855 he was united in marriage to Harriet L. Robson near Upper Sandusky, Ohio, then came to Illinois and settled. Unto this union six children were born, two daughters and four sons. In the fall of 1875 he came to Kansas and settled on his farm north of Cherokee where he resided till the death of his wife in 1898, since when he has lived with his children. Two daughters, Leafy Cummings of Erie, and Hattie Millard of Pittsburg; three sons, C.C. Montee of Pittsburg, J.W. Montee of Los Angeles, Calif., and W.A. Montee of Rocky Ford, Colo., and three brothers, Theodore Montee of McCune, Frank Montee north of Cherokee, and C.F. Montee of west of Pittsburg, survive the deceased.
