Broadway, Pittsburg. Mr. Montee's was found partially dressed lying on his bed, dying, by a maid at the home, who summoned his son, Dr. Charles F. Montee, who resides next door. Doctor Montee summoned Dr. G.A. Smith, but his services were without avail. Mr. Montee had been ill for several weeks, suffering an attack of influenza about three weeks ago. Members of the family, although realizing that he was weakened, did not believe his condition to be serious. Mr. Montee had spent a good portion of Sunday afternoon outdoors. Although no one was present at the time of the fatal attack, it is believed that he had arisen and was sitting on the edge of his bed, dressing, when stricken. The first twelve years of Mr. Montee's life were spent in Sandusky, Ohio. He was born there May 25, 1840. At the age of twelve he moved with his parents to McDonough county, Illinois, where he resided until he was 20, coming to Kansas in 1860, and settling among the Indians of the Miami tribe, near Bonner Springs. He resided there one year, going back to Illinois, where he was married to Miss Mary Emmaline Purdom. Mrs. Montee, who is 81 years of age, survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Montee came to Kansas in 1874, buying a farm two and one-half miles north of Cherokee from James F. Joy, representing the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf railroad, to which the land had been deeded by the government. Coal rights on the land, which had been purchased by him for $3.75 an acre, were recently sold by him to the Jackson Walker Coal and Mining Co. at $100 an acre. Three hundred twenty acres were sold in the transaction. Mr. and Mrs. Montee resided on the farm until a short time ago when they moved to Pittsburg and purchased the home in which he died. He was elected county commissioner in 1894. In 1900, Mr. Montee was elected county treasurer for a three-year term. The position is now held by his son, Samuel Theo Montee. During his term, Mr. Montee was the only Republican holding a county office. Of the thirteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Montee, twelve survive. Francis E. Montee, the eldest son, died Dec. 30th, 1924. Mr. Montee had been a member of the Masonic lodge at Cherokee for forty years, and was a member of the A.O.U.W. at Cherokee. He was also a member of the Baptist church, joining while living in Illinois, prior to coming to Kansas. Mr. Montee, according to close associates, was the only surviving gman who served as an escort to Abraham Lincoln at a debate between Lincoln and Douglas at McComb, Ill., when Lincoln was a candidate for president. He is survived by his wife, six sons, Dr. C.Mart Montee, mayor of Pittsburg; Samuel Theo Montee, county treasurer; Dr. Charles F. Montee, Pittsburg; James Walter Montee, Ft. Scott; William V. Montee, Pittsburg; and Albert A. Montee of Hepler; six daughters, Mrs. J.W. Miley of Topeka, wife of the state superintendent of public instruction; Mrs. Fred Muse, Pittsburg; Mrs. John C. Starnes, Winfield; Mrs. John P. Hoke of Stillwater, Okla.; Mrs. Jas. M. Biles, Fort Scott; and Mrs. R.A. Biles of McAlester,Okla. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the home, 1708 South Broadway, in charge of the Rev. C.J. Armentrout with the Rev. W.N. Mason assisting.
