Read More	Dayton Review November 18, 1897 OBITUARY Mrs. Jane Hedien was born at Uffculum, Devenshire, England, August 31, 1819, and died in Dayton, Iowa, Nov. 8, 1897, aged 78 years, 2 months and 8 days. On the 12th day of June, 1843, Jane Mellewish was united in matrimony to John Baker at James Church, Westminster, England, and six years later, with her husband, emigrated to America. While enroute at Buffalo her husband was stricken with cholera, and for a long time his life was despaired of. He finally recovered and proceeding on their journey they first settled in Illinois. In 1857, with wagons, they again started west and in the fall reached Dayton where they both ended their days. On the way she was attacked with ague and billious fever, and when she reached her destination she was so low that she had to be lifted out of the wagon and carried to the house. John L. Kinney, then a young man, was with her forty years later to the day, Oct. 5th last, and it was called to mind that he had carried her into the home of Aunt Catherine Dowd forty years before. The next spring they filed on a quarter section of land (the quarter now owned by Frank Schill) in Lost Grove township. In the spring they moved a little cabin on the lots now occupied by W.L. Burnett, in fact the cabin is still in existence, occupied as a stable. The government that spring established a post office in Dayton and James Buchanan appointed John Baker its first postmaster, a position he held until his death in 1872. While keeping the post office Auntie Hedien took care of the traveling public and became known for her hospitality far and near. The old soldiers call to mind that during the war any of the boys who came her way found an open house, plenty to eat and drink and nothing to pay, she saying that it was her duty to do that much to help put down the rebellion. After the death of her husband in 1872 she was appointed postmistress and held the office for several years, still keeping hotel, but finally gave it up as the responsibilities became greater. In 1879 she married John Hedien who died in 1889. Mrs. Hedien was converted at the age of sixteen and has ever lived a consistent christian life. In England she was a member of the Episcopal church but as soon as the Methodist church was organized in Dayton she became a member, and although for years she has seldom been able to attend church, she was careful to see that her money helped in all the enterprises of the church. For many years her bounty has regularly been bestowed upon the needy outside of her household, hundreds of dollars, during her life, being thius used in blessing others. At her death, besides dividing her wealth among her relatives, the neediest getting the most, she gave $200 to Grace M.E. church of which she was a member, $100 to the Swedish M.E. church in Dayton, and $100 to the Sunday school of which she was a member when a girl in England. Her funeral was largely attended, her pastor, Rev. E.J. Bristow, assisted by Rev. O.W. Ostrom, conducting it. Loving hands laid her body in its final resting place in Dayton cemetery.
