John Hedien was born in the north of Sweden, April 23, 1816. He emigrated to America in April, 1846 - settling at first in Knox County, Ill., and removing to Iowa in 1855 he settled in Dayton where the remainder of his life has been spent. Read More	Dayton Review October 10, 1889 OBITUARY Died at his home in Dayton, Iowa, Oct. 5th, 1889, John Hedien, aged 73 years, 4 months, 12 days. John Hedien was born in the north of Sweden, April 23, 1816. He emigrated to America in April, 1846 - settling at first in Knox County, Ill., and removing to Iowa in 1855 he settled in Dayton where the remainder of his life has been spent. He was a man of good judgement and more than ordinarily successful in his business ventures. It is thought that he has not seen a well day in forty years, and yet he has been one of the most active and clearest headed men with whom we have become acquainted. He was a believer in the Christian faith and had for very many years been a member of the Swedish M. E. Church, and died in hope of immortality. One of his last acts of generosity was to give a sister church one hundred and fifty dollars to assist them in building. He was a man of quaint humor and it is related of him that when the Swedes started to build their house of worship here many years ago, subscriptions came in slowly, and he said to his pastor "make me out a subscription paper and while you shear the sheep I will shear the goats," (meaning the out-siders) and he died the work so successfully that the building did not lack for funds. In 1879 he married Mrs. Jane Baker who has since been his constant companion, and whom he now leaves to continue the journey alone. He was buried from the M. E. Church on Tuesday, Oct. 8, Rev. Nord peaching his funeral from Gen. 46, 30, "Now let me die since I have seen thy face." He was followed by Rev. Cummings in a few appropriate remarks. Rev. John Linn also followed in a eulogy that reminded one somewhat of the oration of Mark Antony at the grave of Caesar. Theirs was a friendship of nearly forty years and his remarks were very touching.
