They were married at Hazel Green, Wisconsin in 1874, and emigrated to Dakota Territory in 1884. They arrived at the bustling new town of Ree Heights with their four sons and a new baby daughter in a C & NW immigrant car, which also carried all of their household goods, their machinery, and some livestock. They were married at Hazel Green, Wisconsin in 1874, and emigrated to Dakota Territory in 1884. They arrived at the bustling new town of Ree Heights with their four sons and a new baby daughter in a C & NW immigrant car, which also carried all of their household goods, their machinery, and some livestock. During the first winter they lived at the Meyers House, a hotel in Ree Heights, and Simon worked at the railroad warehouse handling coal, grain and umber. His salary was $12.50 a month. In the spring they moved to a new home on the hill southeast of Ree Heights in Midland Township, taking the W ½ of Section 27, one quarter as a homestead and the other by a pre-emption. Their first house was one room, 12 x 16, sodded up to the windows, the upper part being wood. A pole shed with a straw roof was built for the horses, cow and oxen. In 1889, a sturdy granary was moved from Ree Heights and rooms were added to make a three room house. Here the family grew up. One of the older boys died of appendicitis, and three more children were born. Life was not easy as they weathered drought and depression, blizzards and prairie fires, but there was always something interesting and something for fun. They all loved music and with one of the girls at the organ, singing was a favorite pastime for them and for neighbors. Grown up, the children all married and raised families in Hand County. Simon died in 1911 and Jane in 1930. Their children were : Simon Percival, born in 1876, married Eva Davisson, to whom were born two children; John Elmer, born 1878, who died at age 9; Edward Ellsworth, born 1880, married to Pluma Melvin Dick, to whom were born two children; Alfred Isaac, born 1882, married to Delia Wiren, to whom were born ten children; Jennie, born 1884, married to John Wiren, to whom were born three children; Mary Emma, born 1888, married to Verne Danburg, to whom three children were born; Laura Alice born 891, married to William McDowell, to whom three children were born; and Raleigh, born 1893, married to Dollie Walton, to whom were born nine children. ~~~~~~ The Miller Press, Miller, Hand County, South Dakota, Thursday, April 24, 1930, Forty-ninth Year #23, p1 c6 THREE ANSWER DEATH SUMMONS Mrs. Nicholas, County Pioneer Passes Away; Stanley Cox, Prominent York Twp. Farmer, and Young Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kuper Take By Death Mrs. Simon Nicholas was laid to rest in the G.A.R. cemetery on Wednesday afternoon of this week. Services were held in the Church of Christ of this city,, J.A. Dunn, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Meckle, pastor of the Ree Heights Congregational Church. Many floral tributes attended to the high esteem in which she was held in this and surrounding communities. Jane Pedelity was born in Jefferson, Wisconsin, in 1850. She was united in marriage to Simon Nicholas on February 25, 1872. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are still living, two sons having died earlier, one in infancy and one at 18 years of age. Her husband also had preceded her in death 19 years ago. The seven living children are Percy Nicholas, Raleigh Nicholas, Mrs. Mary Danburg and Mrs. Laura McDowell of Miller and Alfred I. and Edward Nicholas and Mrs. Jennie Wiren of Ree Heights. Mrs. Nicholas, with her husband were among the early settlers of Hand County, coming to South Dakota in 1884 and settling on a homestead 12 miles north of Ree Heights. It may be truly said that she withstood the test of the early pioneers with great fortitude. Mother has gone from our midst. Her peaceful life of purity and sincerity, her forgiving spirit, will to her family and friend be a most beautiful example. With all the duties and trial that falls to a mother's lot, she met them most cheerfully and patiently, ever trusting in her Heavenly Father for strength and guidance. She was a devout Christian and member of the Church of Christ of Miller, having united with the church here 35 years ago. After an illness of several months, the trumpet sounded on Easter Sunday evening, April 20th at 8 o'clock and the thread of life was severed. Quietly and peacefully her Savior called her Home at the ripe age of 80 years and 21 days.
