Read More	Obituary: Jasper N. Hornbeck was born April 9, 1856, in Shelby County, IL, and died at his home near Kutch, May 22, 1938 at the age of 82 years, 1 month, and 13 days. He was married March 26, 1886, to Harriet Elizabeth Strong, who preceded him in death, one year and nine months. To this marriage, six children were born, five of whom survive: M. Nobel, Walsenburg, CO; R. Ray, Matheson, CO; Ben R., Santa Ana, CA; Mrs. C. L. Huntoon, Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. R. L. Athey, Compton, CA. One sister, Mrs. Russell Bonham of Danville, IL, and nine grandchildren, also survive. Mr. Hornbeck passed on after a long illness, his three oldest children were at his bedside, Mrs. Huntoon having come from California. Services were held at ten thirty Wednesday morning, May 25, at the Evangelical Church in Simla, Rev. Grauberger officiating. The scripture reading was from the 90th Psalm and was followed by a most illuminating interpretation. Three hymns were beautifully rendered by the choir. Mr. and Mrs. Hornbeck were among the early pioneers of this community, having settled here in 1907, and a small square house, built of sod, was a symbol of pioneer hospitality and neighborly interest. Never were they hard pressed to lend a hand to their fellow men. In those early days, when roads were few, and medical help remote, Mr. Hornbeck carried on with his family at home, while Mrs. Hornbeck, a practical nurse, went far in sunshine or storm to aid those in need of her services. She left a record of having ushered into this homestead county, 82 infants, without loss of life to either mother or child. But for the cooperation, the humanitarian spirit of the man who has just answered his call, this service could have not been performed. Although the old Hornbeck homestead has lately passed into strange hands, all of that is left of the original soddy is a small, hard beaten, path of earth, surely "the work" of these beloved pioneers, "shall live after them."
