Stepan and Stan Anderson Sliefert funeral Home of Sioux Rapids was in charge of arrangements Jay Henry Bales, the son of James and Anna Bales of Eldora, was born, April 25, 1910 He spent his childhood in Eldora, where he received his early education, He later attended the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a BA degree in 1931 He married Pauline Anna Kenney on July 17, 1937, in Kanawa. In 1946, the couple moved to Sioux Rapids, where they owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast Store for a number of years before Mr. Bales joined the United States Postal Service. He began as a clerk and then became Postmaster for the 18 years of his service. He was a certified Postal Trainer for the last three years before he retired from the Postal Service in 1988 Mr. Bales served in the U.S. Marines Corps during World War II. He was in the Pacific Theater during the war, serving on Iwo Jima, Guam and other islands of the area. He received the purple heart during active duty and was discharged with the rank of Corporal on November 14, 1945 He was a charter member of the Little Sioux Golf and Country Club where after his retirement he taught golf to young people in the area Mr. Bales was also a charter member of the Buena Vista County Health Department and served that organization for 21 years. He was inducted into the "Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame" in 1989 for the volunteer services he performed in Buena Vista County He served on the Boy Scouts of America Board of review for many years. At the time of his death, he was still active in the local Booster Club and was a member of American Legion Graeber Rowe Post #394 of Sioux Rapids. He had obtained Scottish Rite, had been active in the Sioux Rapids Lions Club and had served on the library board for many years He was member of the First United Church in Sioux Rapids Mr. Bales was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Dr. Suzanne Bales He is survived by his twin sister, Mrs. Faye E.
