Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com. Jean Schroeder was born on December 20, 1924, in Davenport, IA to George Schroeder and Gladys Norris Schroeder. Her family moved to Fairfield, Iowa when Jean was 2 years old, and she resided there until the end. Jean married John H. Six, the love of her life, on November 25, 1945, in Fairfield, Iowa. They had 4 children. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1942. During WWII when so many men were sent overseas, she was asked to sell shoes at the early age of 18 at Brown's Shoe Fit on the town square and worked there for 54 years. Jean was also Fairfield's Welcome Wagon Hostess from 1965 to 1976. She welcomed many new families and newborns to the town and organized the Newcomer's Club where many ladies enjoyed coffee together and learned how to play Bridge under Jean's tutelage. Jean was confirmed as a young girl in the First Lutheran Church but transferred her religious affiliation to the First Christian Church once she married John. She was very active in the church. Jean was also a mem-ber of Jaycees and TTT; she was a Girl Scout Leader and a long-time member of the Walton Club. She was also an avid and dedicated fan of the Fairfield Trojans, the Hawkeyes, and the Chicago Cubs. Jean was very good at sports and loved to play golf, baseball, bowling, bicycling, basketball, volleyball, ice skating, roller skating, walking, and playing pool. She loved card games and playing games with her kids and anyone else who wanted to play. After Jean's husband died in 1985, she served on the board of the Libertyville Travel-ers Club and enjoyed many bus trips across the United States for many years. A well-loved lady, Jean enjoyed meeting new people from every aspect of life. She cherished time with her family and friends and was the gal who could always brighten your day with a smile. Above all, Grandma Jean enjoyed spending time with her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys, her stepmother, Mary, her oldest daughter, Janet Kay Curtis, and two sisters, Janan Nixon and Pat Despain. Many other relatives have long since passed and were waiting to welcome her on the other side. Left to share her story are her daughters Jeri (Tom) Kunkle and Jolene Bartruff (Jim Morrow), and her son Jeffrey (Katie) Six all of Fairfield. Jean is left with 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. "Jean never knew a stranger and she could sure "work a room!"
