Description	:	Jean M. (Wetzel) Parker, 89, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Wednesday at a local nursing home. Jean was born Oct. 29, 1919, in Eureka, Mont., the second of six children of Jess and Emma Wetzel. Her maternal forebears, the Leonards and Rabers, date to the 1860s in Tobacco Valley. Jean was born Oct. 29, 1919, in Eureka, Mont., the second of six children of Jess and Emma Wetzel. Her maternal forebears, the Leonards and Rabers, date to the 1860s in Tobacco Valley. Her father, Jess Wetzel, was of the West Virginia Wetzels whose families included the famous frontiersman, Lew Wetzel, a friend of the writer, Zane Grey, and for whom the Wetzel State Forest of West Virginia was named. Upon completion of high school in Eureka, Jean did civil service work with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Denver and Boise until 1944, when she accepted work with the Great Northern Railway as an operator in train dispatch. She married Willard Clair "Bill" Parker in Seattle in March 1946, and they moved to Spokane in 1948. Jean stayed home to rear two daughters Linda and Diane, directing and chauffeuring them through skating, dancing, music, and all of the activities associated with school and the growing-up process. She was excellent at sewing and made many of the girls' outfits. Jean had a wonderful circle of women friends in Spokane that got together regularly for swimming at the Elks and lunches out. Jean had tenderness for all animals, which she passed on to her daughters. She greatly loved her wire fox terriers and her "granddogs". When her husband retired in 1979, she joined him in vigorous pursuit of the hobbies and activities, which had been put aside in the earlier years. Jean enjoyed ballroom dancing, which they did at every opportunity. They took many wonderful trips to faraway countries and trailered extensively in the U.S. and Western Canada. One particularly memorable trailer trip was a four-month journey to visit the Wetzel and Leonard relatives in West Virginia. In 1994, she and her husband moved from Spokane to Great Falls to be near a daughter who lived there. She is survived by her husband, Willard C. Parker of Great Falls; sister Lela Holder of Kalispell; her daughters, Linda Rae (Gary) Hurley, of Newport, Ore., and Claire Diane (Bob) Darling of Fort Benton; three grandsons, Joel and Jon Hurley, and Chris Dennis and their spouses; several great-granddaughters, including Freya, whom she took great joy in meeting just weeks before her passing; and a great-great-granddaughter. At her request, no services will be held. Cremation will take place under the direction of O'Connor Funeral Home. Source- Great Falls Tribune, June 5, 2009
