Description	:	Note: The first name varies with sources. Evergreen cemetery records and the Burial Permit listed the first name as "Jennette", while the Fairfield Tribune obituary referred to her as "Jannetta". There is at least one Mulkins family group sheet that lists the first name as "Lydia", but it isn't sourced well enough to justify using on this memorial at this time. Unfortunately, there is no headstone for her to provide clarification. Will use the cemetery/death record listing version for this memorial, but will add in "Jannetta" for the nickname to cover that base. It is likely that there are additional variations... It is likely that there are additional variations in census reports, so trying to determine the precise spelling is not going to satisfy everyone. ----------- From Fairfield Tribune obituary, Nov. 25, 1896, Pg. 6 Col. 1: Born near Milwaukee, Wisconsin and died near Fairfield, Iowa. Came to Keosauqua, Iowa (Van Buren county, Iowa) when she was 11 year old, and married J. Kellogg Mulkins when she was about 18 years old. Eight children, seven surviving her. Two of them, Eva and Jesse, are buried in the same burial plot as Jennette/Janetta; neither have headstones in place for them. Mrs. MULKINS was born near Milwaukee, Wis., in 1845, and died in Fairfield, Iowa, November 17, 1896, aged fifty-one years, three months and fifteen days. She came to Keosauqua, Iowa, when eleven years old, and at eighteen was married to Mr. Kellogg MULKINS (sic - Jabez Kellogg MULKINS). She was the mother of eight children, seven of whom survive her. One ot these is in Colorado and six are in Fairfield. She was left a widow when her son Frank was twelve years old, with six children younger than he. Mrs. MULKINS worked and managed her affairs in a manner that enabled her to keep her children together, and bring them up to manhood and womanhood. No one knows of the toils, cares and anxieties of a mother left alone with a lot of children to care for but those who have had the trial. Mrs. MULKINS became a member of the Free Methodist church in 1870, and of the Christian church in 1894. I have been told she always manifested in her life the true christian character, and from personal knowledge I know this to be true since my acquaintance with her. I visited her often during her sickness which has been long and painful, but notwithstanding this, she bore her affliction with fortitude and patience; talked often of her bright prospects of a better life, and of a home in heaven, and exhorted her children to fathfulness (sic), and by all means to try to meet her in that Better World.
