August 7, 1900, Page 1, Column 4: ---- WED THIS MORNING The Lives of John Watry and Miss Jennie Ketchum are Joined in Wedlock. In the presence of a few relatives and friends, John Watry and Miss Jennie Ketchum were married at the St. Mary's church this morning at nine o'clock, with nuptial mass. Rev. P. A. MeLoughlin preformed the ceremony. Mr. [Richard Eugene] Ketchum, brother of the bride, and Miss Ella Hess attended the couple. After the ceremony a wedding break- fast was served at the home of Mrs. John Coff, 192 Edward street, a sister of the groom. The happy couple will begin house- keeping at once at North Aurora. The groom is a stone mason and is well known in this vicinity. The bride is a daughter of Leander Ketchum, and is a most popular young lady. ------------------------------- Another newspaper article reads as follows: --- THEY ARE HAPPY NOW IN MATRIMONIAL BONDS. John Watry and Miss Jennie Ketchum Plight Their Troth Today - Ceremony at St. Mary's Church. John Watry and Miss Jennie Ketchum were married with nupital mass this morning at 9 o"clock in St. Mary's church in the presence of a few friends. The ceremony was preformed by the pastor, Rev. P. A. McLoughlin. The bride was attended by Miss Ella Hess, and the groom by a brother of the bride, Eugene Ketchum. After the ceremony the party repaired to the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. John Koss, 192 Edwards street, where a wedding breakfast was served. The young couple will commence housekeeping at once in a neatly furnished cottage at North Aurora. The groom is a stone mason by trade. His bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leander Ketchum of Eola. ----------------------------- They lived in North Aurora, Illinois, and then in Dry Wood Lake Township, Roberts County, South Dakota in 1905. ------------------------------- They were still living in S. Dakota in the 1910 census, and Jennie's father was then living with them. ------------------------------ They also lived in Eden, Sisseton township, Marshall County S. Dakota. ------------------------------- Jennnie's parents Leander E. Ketchum, and Mary Elizabeth, were listed as being "seperated" in 1909 (per lawsuit documents). They were divorced "about" 1910. --------------------------------- They came from S. Dakota to Buchanan, Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan in 1917 (per obit for John F. Watry Jr., obit for Jennie, and obit for their daughter Catherine). ------------------------------ They lived on a farm 4 or 5 miles North-West of Buchanan, in Buchanan township, Berrien County Michigan. They were still living here in 1920, and in the village of Buchanan in 1930. ------------------------------ After eight children, Jennie filed for divorce on March 27, 1932. The divorce was finalized on March 23, 1934 in Berrien Co. MI. Jennie never remarried. ----------------------------------- When Jennie's sister Alice (Ketchum) Letcher went to obtain a "delayed" birth certificate in DuPage County Illinois, in 1940, Jennie went along and served as a wittiness, and vouched for Alice's date of birth. At that time (on Dec. 7, 1940), Jennie's address is listed as 604 S. Portage St., Buchanan, Michigan. --------------------------------- The eight children of Jennie Ketchum and John Frank Watry Jr. are: (Five girls and 3 boys) -------------------- 1. Maria (Mary) Belle Watry. b. Feb. 7, 1901 in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. m. # 1. Robert M. Camfield, on July 25, 1918, in Buchanan, MI. m. # 2. Fred Rossow, on Jan. 10, 1925, in Buchanan, MI. m. # 3. Kenneth R. Smith (1905-1985) d. 1985. They lived in Buchanan, MI in 1953 and in 1963. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery (Section A, Lot 288). ------------------------------- 2. Cecilia ("Celia") Mae Watry. b. (? Feb. 7), 1901, in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois (or born 1904, per MI death record). (1901-1953 on headstone). m. # 1. Sherman Henry Maxson. "Celia" Watry (age 17), was married on Jan. 1, 1920, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, to Sherman Henry Maxson (age 20, born in Michign), the son of Clark B. Maxson and unknown Brant. They had a daughter Mary Maxson (born about 1921). m. # 2. Alfred Amundson. "Celia Watry Maxson" (age 23, born 1902 in Illinois), was married on Oct. 2, 1925, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, to Alfred Amundson, (age 29, born 1896 in Minn.), the son of Joseph Amundson and unknown Ysen). They lived in Niles, Michigan in 1930 and 1953. Children: Mary Maxson Amundson (Alfred's step-daughter), Anna Mae, and Edward John. d. July 26, 1953, in the Berrien County Hospital, in Berrien Center, Berrien County Michigan. (Last residence- Bertrand, MI). Buried: Silverbrook Cemetery, in Niles, Michigan. ------------------------------ 3. Frank Frederick Watry. b. Jan. 29, 1905 in Eden Park, Marshall County, South Dakota. m. Frank Watry, age 21, was married to Helen Boltz, age 19, on July 4, 1926, in Berrien County Michigan. She is the daughter of Charles Boltz, and Helen Garrison. d. Oct. 17, 1980, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan. He lived in Buchanan, MI in 1953 and in 1963. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, MI (Section F, Lot 14). ------------------------------- 4. Agnes Mary Watry. b. Feb. 16, 1907 in Eden Park, Marshall County, South Dakota. m. June 27, 1934, in Fulton, Indiana, to Cress Alonzo Weldon, the son of Alonzo Weldon and Retta May Dalrymple. They lived in Battle Creek, Calhoun County Michigan in the 1930 census. They lived in Buchanan, MI in 1953. and in 1963. d. Nov. 29, 1996, at the age of 89. Buried: Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, MI (next to her husband), (in New Section 62, Lot 13, Space 1). -------------------------------- 5. Michael Herbert Watry. b. Feb. 16, 1911, in Eden Park, Marshall County, South Dakota. d. Thursday, May 1, 1919, age 8, at their home, 4 or 5 miles North-West of Buchanan, in Buchanan township, Berrien County, Michigan. The funeral was held in the Catholic church Saturday morning. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, MI. (Section A, Lot 172). --------------------------------- 6. Catherine Johanna Watry. (Listed as "Kathryn Jennie Watry" on marriage certificate). b. Dec. 19, 1912, in Eden Park, Marshall County South Dakota. m. # 1. Oct. 23, 1931, in Rochester, Fulton Co. Indiana, to Ralph David Skinner (b. May 17, 1903, in Sullivan IN, d. 1958 or 1959, in St. Joseph, Berrien County Michigan, the son of Alva V. Skinner and Myrtie (Marie) Olie Starkey). (They had a son named Russell Lee Skinner (1940-2002), who married Margie on Nov. 17, 1962). They lived in Buchanan, MI in 1953 and in 1963. m. # 2. Nels Nordin, on Nov. 10, 1971, in Las Vegas, Nev. d. Aug. 2000. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, next to her first husband Ralph David Skinner (Section F, Lot 21). ------------------------------- 7. Anna ("Annie") Elizabeth Watry. b. July 7, 1915 in Britton, South Dakota. m. Jan. 23, 1932, in Niles, Michigan, to Victor John Leggett. Children: Betty Ann, Bonnie J., and Bobby Victor Leggett. They moved to Buchanan, MI in 1920, and to Niles, MI in 1928. They lived in Niles, MI in 1953 and 1963, and at 1108 N. Fifth St. in Niles, Michigan in 1996. d. May 9, 1996 (age 80), in the Lakeland Medical Center, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan. Buried: Silverbrook Cemetery, in Niles, Michigan. ------------------------------- 8. James John Watry. b. March 9, 1918 in Buchanan Township, Berrien County, Michigan. m. Feb. 18, 1956, in Buchanan, MI to Pauline E. Hingst (1918-2001). They lived in Buchanan, MI in 1953. d. Aug. 16, 1960, in St. Joseph, MI. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery (Section D, Lot 266). _________________________________ Jennie's ex-husband John F. Watry, died on Sun., Jan. 11, 1953 at the age of 84, in the Berrien County Hospital, in Berrien Center, Michigan. ------------------------------ The 1958 Buchanan City Directory lists Mrs. Jennie Watry, living at 604 South Portage Street. ------------------------------- Jennie was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Buchanan, Michigan (as were her sisters). --------------------------------- At the time of her death in 1963, Jennie lived on Route two, in Buchanan, Michigan. -------------------------------- Jennie died in the Berrien County Hospital, in Berrien Center, Michigan, at the age of 83. ------------------------------- One obituary for Jennie was published in the Benton Harbor, MI "News-Palladium" newspaper on Tues. March 26, 1963, page 10. --------------------------------- The following obituary for Jennie was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper, in Niles, MI on March 26, 1963, page 2: ---- MRS. JENNIE WATRY BUCHANAN - Mrs. Jennie Watry, 83, of route two, Buchanan, died at 2 a.m. today in the Berrien County Hospital, Berrien Center, [MI]. Mrs. Watry was admitted to the hospital last Friday. She was born March 24, 1880, in Aurora, Ill. She was married to John F. Watry [Jr.] in 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Watry came to Buchanan, [MI] from South Dakota in 1917. Mrs. Watry ["should" say "Mr." Watry], died in 1953. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth [Maria Belle] R. Smith, Mrs. Agnes Weldon and Mrs. Katherin Skinner, all of Buchanan, Mrs. Anna Leggett, Niles: one son, Frank F. [Watry Jr.], Buchanan, [MI]: four sisters, Mrs. Alice Letcher and Mrs. Stella Koontz [Kuntz], both of Niles, Mrs. May [Ida May] Letcher, Buchanan, and Mrs. Emma Runkel, Montgomery, Ill., a brother, Fred Ketchum, Sturgis, [MI], 23 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grand-children. Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Frank Jansen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, [MI]. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Swem Funeral Home, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday. ------------------------------ Note: Four of Jennie's siblings also moved from Illinois, to Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, and are also buried in this cemetery. ------------------------------- Click on photos for enlargements, captions, and additional photos. -----------------------------
