P. O'Brian, Pastor of St. Mary's (Catholic) Church (per their marriage license). -------------------------------- (Ida May and her sister Alice Ketchum married brothers Joseph and Alois Letcher). --------------------------------- An article published in the local newspaper, reads as follows: ---------------- COUPLE WED HALF CENTURY IN BUCHANAN. BUCHANAN, Mich. - Mr. and Mrs. Joseph G. Letcher Sr. will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday with an afternoon open house in their home at Rt. 1, Buchanan, [MI]. Mr. and Mrs. Letcher were married in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Aurora [their marriage certificate says "Eola"], Ill., Feb. 20, 1906. In March, 1912, they moved to their present farm home north of Buchanan. The couple has five children, Sister Mary Joseph, Petoskey, Mich.: Joseph Jr., South Bend, [IN]: and Harvey, Robert and Mrs. Lillian Vaselin, of Buchanan, [MI]. There are 10 grandchildren. --------------------------------- Note: Their marriage certificate states that they were married in Eola, Illinois, which is just N.-E. of Aurora, Illinois, and just West of Naperville, Illinois. -------------------------------- Joseph and Ida May purchased a farm near Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan in 1912, in Section 15, of Buchanan township. -------------------------------- The five children of Ida May Ketchum and Joseph George Letcher Sr. are: (two girls and three boys) ------------------------------- 1. Grace Mary Letcher. b. July 20, 1908 in Naperville, ILL. (per her baptismal certificate).(Her obituary incorrectly gives her date-of-birth as July 30). Baptised on Aug. 1, 1908, as Mary Grace Agnes Letcher, at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville, IL. Her godparents were Alois Letcher and Mary Letcher (her father's brother and sister). Grace was the Valedictorian of the Buchanan High School Class of 1926. (Picture of her in the 1926 yearbook). Grace became a school teacher, and a Catholic Nun. Grace was never married. d. Feb. 12, 1959 in the Pawating Hospital in Niles, MI. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, Michigan, next to her parents (Section D, Lot 194). ------------------------------- 2. Harvey James Letcher. b. Oct. 20, 1910 in Naperville, ILL. Baptised on Oct. 30, 1910 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville, ILL. His sponsors (Godparents) were Alois Letcher, and John Neff. m. Sept. 27, 1938 in Three Oaks, MI to Josephine Mary Yurkovic. d. June 10, 1993 in Chico, California. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, MI (Section D, lot 109). -------------------------------- 3. Joseph George ("Joe") Letcher Jr. b. Nov. 18, 1913 in Buchanan, MI. Joe graduated from the Buchanan High School in 1932. m. #1. Oct. 3, 1933, in St. Joseph Co. IN to Thessel L. Mitchell. Joe and Thessel had three sons. Joe and Thessel divorced in 1949. m. #2. Feb. 14, 1950 in South Bend, IN to Mrs. Ruby Opal (Barr) Kinney. (Ruby was born Sept. 19, 1922). (Ruby had a daughter and a son with her first husband). Joe and Ruby had one son. d. April 20, 1984 in South Bend, St. Joseph County Indiana. Buried: Sumption Prairie Cemetery, in South Bend, Indiana (Plot: Far North section, 15th row from the West end). ------------------------------ 4. Lillian May Letcher. (Called "Sis" by her family). b. Feb. 9, 1926 in Buchanan, MI. Lillian graduated from Buchanan High School and South Bend Business College. m. Nov. 4, 1950 to John Michael Vaselin [Sr.] in Our Lady Chapel of the Sacred Heart Catholic church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame (at the Basilica of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana). John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Vaselin of Plymonth, Pennsylvania. (Engagement announcement in "The Harold-Press", newspaper, in St. Joseph, Michigan, on Wed. June 8, 1949, page 7).(Marriage announcement in "The Harold-Press" newspaper in St. Joseph, Michigan on Wed. November 8, 1950, page 4). They had one daughter and two sons. d. Dec. 17, 2007, age 81. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan. Lillian's obituary was published in the South Bend Tribune, in South Bend, Indiana on Wednesday Dec. 19, 2007. (See her memorial on this web site). ------------------------------- 5. Robert ("Bob") Edwin Letcher. b. July 30, 1928 in Buchanan, MI. m. Aug. 13, 1949 in Buchanan, MI to Doris Deane Shreve. d. July 15, 2006 in Niles, MI. Bob and Doris had six children (five daughters and one son). Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan. _______________________________ Ida May died in the Dor-a-Lin Nursing Home in South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 85. --------------------------------- Ida May and Joseph G. Letcher Sr. are buried next to their eldest child, Grace (in Section D, Lot 194). It reads as follows: -------- Mrs. Ida Letcher. Buchanan - Mrs. Ida May Letcher, 85, of South Bend, formerly of Buchanan, died at 6 p.m. Monday in the Dor-a Lin Nursing Home, South Bend, [IN], where she had been a patient since Feb. 18. Mrs. Letcher was born May 2, 1886, in Naperville, Ill., and had lived here since 1912. She was born [should say "married"] Feb. 20, 1906, in Naperville [marriage certificate says "Eola", Illinois]. Her husband, Joseph, died in 1959. Mrs. Letcher was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Alter and Rosery Society of the church. Survivors include three sons, Harvey J. of Manteca, Calif., Joseph G. Jr. of South Bend [IN], and Robert E., of Buchanan [MI]: a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Vaslin [Vaselin] of South Bend (with whom she made her home): a brother, Fred Ketchum, of Buchanan: a sister, Mrs. Alice Letcher of Buchanan: 17 grand-children and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Robert T. Utrup officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
