The Ketchum genealogy states that she was born in 1891. The 1900 and the 1910 census's both show that Stella was born in 1891, and that she was older than her sister Alice, who was born in 1892. In the childhood family photo (on the right), one can see that Stella is older then Alice. ------------------------------ Note: Stella's parents were divorced "about" 1910. ------------------------------ Stella was married three times: ---------------- m. # 1. Budd Joseph Doty, on Feb. 4, 1913 in Aurora, Kane County Illinois. Budd was born on Feb. 12, 1892 in Sugar Grove, Kane County Illinois, and he died in Sept. 11, 1979 in Aurora, Kane County Illinois. Budd was the fourth of four children born to Joseph Doty and his wife Ella Lavina Paull. Stella and Budd J. Doty had a daughter named Evelyn Lucelle Doty, born Jan. 4, 1914 in Sugar Grove, Kane County Illinois, and died March 19, 1996, in Berrien County Michigan. Daughter Evelyn married Frank A. Trapp. [Before their marriage, Frank Trapp and Evelyn Doty were wittiness' at the marriage of Evelyn's cousin Paul A. Letcher to Thelma C. Bliss in 1935]. Stella and Budd J. Doty were divorced about 1916. Frank, Evelyn, and their son Donald Trapp lived in Buchanan, MI and are also buried in this cemetery (next to her mother Stella), in Section D, lot # 162. ---------- Note: Budd Joseph Doty later married Mrs. Pauline (Walper) Miller, on Feb. 15, 1922, in Kane County Illinois, and they had one son Richard Eugene Doty Sr., born April 20, 1922, in Aurora, Kane County Illinois, and died July 27, 2001, in Mesa, Maricopa County Arizona, at the age of 79. Richard Eugene Doty was married to Alice Grabner (or Gragner). The 1930 census shows Budd and his second wife Pauline, living in Aurora, Kane County Illinois with their son Richard, and Budd's step-daughter Loretta Miller. Budd's second wife Pauline was born on Feb. 16, 1892, in Aurora, Illinois, and died in Aurora, Illinois on Sept. 11, 1941. Pauline is buried along with Budd's parents and siblings in the Jericho Cemetery. Budd and Pauline must have been divorced because Budd is not mentioned in Pauline's obituary. ----- Note: Budd's parents Joseph Doty and Ella Lavina Paull are buried in the Jericho Cemetery, in Sugar Grove, Kane County Illinois, along with Budd's three siblings, Nellie Ann (Doty) Taylor, Emma Diana (Doty) Kouth, and Robinson Russell Doty, and also Budd's second wife Pauline. Budd is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, in Montgomery, Kane County Illinois (West of Aurora), next to Rose S. Doty. See the memorial for Budd J. Doty, of Illinois, on this web site. ----------------------------------- m. # 2. Frank J. Hurst. Frank was born Dec. 12 1892, in Oldenburg, Franklin County Indiana. Frank was a World War One veteran. He served as ILL Pvt. 1st 2 Trench Motor Btry CAC (per cemetery records). He moved to Buchanan, MI in 1922. Frank died on March 5, 1939, in the Pawating Hospital, in Niles, Michigan, from skull fractures and other injuries he suffered when caught in the belt of a buzz saw. Frank is also buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, in the Veterans' Circle, in Section E, lot # 3. Frank's obituary was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper, in Niles, Michigan on March 6, 1939, page 2. See the memorial for Frank J. Clarence Adam Kuntz, on Sept. 7, 1940, in LaPorte County Indiana, the son of Adam Kuntz Jr. and his wife Katherine (nickname "Kate") Allen. (This was the third marriage for both Clarence and Stella). Clarence and Stella lived on Chicago Road, Southwest of Buchanan, Michigan. ------------------------------- Note: Clarence and his second wife Dorothy were living in Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan in the 1930 census (near Stella's sister Alice and her husband Alois Letcher). Clarence had five children, including:---- 1. Adam D. Kuntz of Buchanan, MI. b. Oct. 13, 1909 in Bremen, Indiana. m. Lottie R. Kujawski on Dec. 29, 1934 in Three Oaks, Michigan. Adam and Lottie had six daughters and five sons. d. Adam died on Feb. 1, 1992. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan. (See Adam's memorial on this web site). 2. John J. Kuntz of South Bend, IN. b. about 1912. 3. Marguerite I. Kuntz. b. about 1914. m. Jay Martine. Marguerite and Jay Martine lived in Buchanan, Michigan. 4. William H. Kuntz of Mishawaka, IN. b. 1919. -------------------- Clarence died on March 2, 1961, on Chicago Road, South-West of Buchanan, Michigan (Rural Route # 4, Niles, Michigan, post office address). Clarence was born Jan. 28, 1884 in Bremen, Marshall County Indiana. -------------------------------- Note: Marshall County Indiana has a marriage record for Clarance A. Kuntz and Doratha L. Weil. They were married on April 13, 1908. Clarence A. Kuntz is buried in the Bremen Cemetery in Bremen, Indiana, near his parents. Services for Mrs. Clarence Adam (Stella) Kuntz will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Swem Funeral home with the Rev. Leon Pohl, pastor of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic church officiating. Mrs. Kuntz, 75, of 506 Cecil Ave., was found dead in her back yard Tuesday, May 21. Born Aug. 15, 1893 [should be 1891] in Eola, Ill., she married Frank Hurst. He preceded her in death March 5, 1939. She married Mr. Kuntz Sept. 7, 1940 in LaPorte, Ind. He preceded her in death March 7, 1961. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank [Evelyn] Trapp of Buchanan, three step-sons, Adam Kuntz of Buchanan, William Kuntz of Mishawaka, and John J. Kuntz of South Bend; a step-daughter, Mrs. Jay Martine of Buchanan; a brother, Fred Ketchum of Buchanan; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Letcher of Bertrand [township], Mrs. May Letcher of Roseland, Ind., and Mrs. Emma Runkel of Aurora, Ill.' three grandchildren, and 17 step- grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and 21 great step-grandchildren. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the Swem Funeral home after 3 p.m. today (Thursday). ------------------------------- Another obituary for Stella was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper in Niles, MI on May 22, 1968, page 20. It reads: --------------- MRS. STELLA KUNTZ. BUCHANAN. Mrs. Stella Kuntz, 75, 506 Cecil Ave. [in Buchanan], died shortly after noon Tuesday at her home. Dr. Kent Hassan, assistant Berrien County medical examiner, ruled that death was due to natural causes. She was found at about 5:30 p.m. by a neighbor, lying in her yard. She was born Aug. 15, 1893 [1891] at Eola, ILL [just West of Naperville, ILL], and came to Buchanan when she was a child [incorrect]. She was married to Frank Hurst, who died March 5, 1939. On Sept. 7, 1940, she was married to Clarence Adam Kuntz in LaPorte, Ind. He died March 2, 1961. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank [Evelyn] Trapp, Buchanan, [MI]; three stepsons, Adam, Buchanan, [MI]; William, Mishawaka, [IN]; and John, South Bend, [IN]; stepdaughter, Mrs. Jay [Marguerite] Martine, Buchanan; a brother, Fred Ketchum, Buchanan; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Letcher, Bertrand [Bertrand township, S. of Buchanan, MI]; Mrs. May [Ida May] Letcher, Roseland, Ind. [in nursing home]; and Mrs. Emma Runkel, Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 21 step great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Swem Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon H. Pohl, pastor of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Thursday. --------------------------------- Note: Stella did NOT come to Buchanan, MI as a child. Stella age 19, was living with her sister Alice and Alice's husband Alois Letcher in Naperville Township, DuPage County Illinois at the time of the 1910 census. ------------------------------- Stella was living in Sugar Grove, Kane County Illinois when her daughter Evelyn Doty was born in 1914, and Stella was living in Plainfield, Will County Illinois when her father died in 1918. -------------------------------- Stella probably died at the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 6 days. -------------------------------- The "Memorial Card" at Stella's funeral, reads as follows: --- Service for STELLA KUNTZ BORN August 15, 1893 [1891] Eola, Illinois. PASSED AWAY May 21, 1968 Buchanan, Michigan. SERVICES HELD AT Swem Funeral Home May 24, 1968, 2 p.m. CLERGYMAN Rev. Leon H. Pohl. INTERMENT Oak Ridge Cemetery. PALLBEARERS William Newsom, Ira Swartz, Robert Kell, Robert Koenegshof, Robert Hall, Frank Feifar. --------------------------- Stella is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Section D, Lot # 162, near her daughter Evelyn (Doty) Trapp. Her headstone reads: MOTHER STELLA C.
