Jerry was born Oct. 18, 1938, in Pierre, to Joe and Stella (Vance) Hosman. During his high school years, he worked at his uncle Fritz Hosman's Skelly gas station in Pierre. After graduating from high school in 1956, he and two classmates joined the Navy. He attended service schools in Oklahoma and Florida, and duty stations in Texas and Hawaii. Returning to Pierre after his discharge from the Navy in 1959, he worked briefly on a survey crew on the tunnels at Oahe Dam. In January, 1960, he began a 38-year career with the S.D. State Highway Department where he worked in the foundations and soils and the materials sections. He was involved in many highway projects including the Platte/Winner Bridge, the I-90 bridge at Chamberlain, the I-90 interstate from Wall to Reliance, and numerous other soils testing and grading projects throughout his career. He retired from S.D. DOT in April of 1998. He married Gloria Cole on Sept. 11, 1960, at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre. Together they raised three sons at their home in Pierre. During his lifetime, he was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church where he was a charter member. He served as church council president and on numerous church committees. He sang in the choir and was active in the men's group. He served on the Aid Association for Lutherans and Thrivent local boards. He served as an adult leader and coordinator of Boy Scout Troop 173 in Pierre for many years and accompanied the troop on many camping trips. He was proud of his service to the Boy Scouts and received numerous honors for his involvement with Boy Scouts. He was proud of the fact that all three of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was grateful for the work and dedication of many health care professionals, especially Dr. Tom Huber, prior to and recovering from his kidney transplant in 1993. After his retirement in 1998, Jerry and Gloria enjoyed traveling, visiting 46 states. His favorite trips included cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, as well as trips to the Canadian provinces of PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gloria, and their sons Lonnie (Anne) and children Sam and Allison of Custer, Lorne (Faith) and children Jon, Matt, Patrick, and Charlie of Royse City, Texas, and Lee (Michelle) and children McKenna and Luke of Summerset, and his sister Marie Hendrickson of Custer. He is preceded in death by his parents, his niece Kim Sander, and brother-in-law Frank Hendrickson. Memorials have been established for Boy Scout Troop 173 and Hospice of Pierre.
