He was soon followed by his brother, Fred, and then the parents (Henry and Angel) with two brothers and an only sister. The mother died within the year, the hard life of crude pioneer ways more than her frail body could endure. That year was one of unusual rain and their dug-out, roofed though it was with the heavy prairie grass, could not shed the waters. This home was in the section now occupied by a great-grandson, Leslie Droge. The daughter, Sophia was nine years old at the mothers death, and she did her best to make a home for the father and brothers. The Poppe family: Henry was a while in Wyoming working for the Union Pacific Railroad. On his return he married (1871) Minna Robbing and they made their home on the state line in Nebraska. Fred Poppe married Amoleia Wiesendippe, sons, Henry and Carl, daughters, Minnie Hartman and Anna Simms. August Poppe lived near Deshler, Nebr. Only his linage carries on the Poppe name. Conrad died a young man of blood poisoning, a thumb shot off at a charivari. Sophia married Conrad Droge, 1873.
