Bright, age 91 years. While Mr. Bright had not been in very good health, due to infirmities of his age, friends were not prepared for the shock of the news of his passing away. About ten days it is thought that a light stroke of paralysis affected one arm and gradually worked up to his shoulder and neck, but nothing serious was thought of. He had just been raised up partially in his bed when the death angel summoned him. Loved and respected by every man, woman and child who knew him, his passing will be genuinely mourned by hundreds of friends throughout the county where he had resided for over 50 years. His was truly a fruitful and well spent life, always cheerful and kind to his friends and acquaintances, it was a pleasure to have know this splendid character. For the past couple years he had been over to town to visit friends only infrequently, and for the past eight months he has been confined to his home all of the time, but his cheerful nature carried him through to the end. Jessie A. Bright was born near Fulton, Missouri, on June 6, 1841. Following the death of his mother in 1846, Jesse Bright was reared in the home of his mother's brother, John Price. As a young man, he accompanied his uncle and other members of the family overland to California. Due to gold discoveries at Jacobsville, Nev., they remained there for a time. A month later they went to Sacramento, Calif., where Mr. Bright worked on a grain ranch, and his uncle and family returned to Missouri the following year. Mr. Bright remained in California for three years after which he returned to the east, driving a freight team from Sacramento to Salt Lake City in 1863. The Union Pacific was then being built and the terminus was at Cheyenne, Wyo., where he boarded a train for his old Missouri home. There he resumed farming and on Feb. 21, 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Eller, to which union six children were born, five of whom survive him. In 1882, he left Mexico, Mo., for Jefferson City, Mo., where they boarded the steamer Red Cloud, taking on board a team, wagon, household goods, a box of chickens and meat. They arrived in Fort Benton by boat on June 3, 1882. I. G. Baker, and old friend of the family, had induced them to return to Montana for their future home. The day following their arrival the Brights drove to the Highland district to locate a cousin, Mrs. James Berry. Soon after his arrival there he purchased a relinquishment from a settler and the family moved to the one-room cabin, were they resided for 36 years. Later Mr. Bright build a three-room log house and acquired some cows, whose increase started him in the stock business, which he continued until he left the ranch. He also raised a number of horses for which he found a ready market. The original homestead was composed of 240 acres and later he acquired another such tract in the mountains. There was unlimited open range for all the livestock he cared to handle. He was one of the early settlers that tried out alfalfa and later a portion of his ranch was devoted to grain. After living on the ranch for a period of six years, he and his wife disposed of their ranch property and retired. For two years they lived in Twin Falls, Idaho, and then returned to Fort Benton where they have since resided. His life was truly the life of the real pioneer and it took courage to endure the hardships and privations that accompanied a life on the plains at that period in the state's history. His passing will leave a place that is hard to fill. He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife for 60 years, Mrs. Mary A. Bright; two sons, Aram E., Fort Benton, and Samuel of Belt; three daughters, Mrs. Susie Thorpe and Mrs. Malcolm Morrow, Fort Benton, and Mrs. Roy L. Fish, of Raynesford; seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery.
