Holmes, 70, Holyoke businessman and a resident of Phillips County for 58 years, were conducted Friday afternoon at the Holyoke Church of Christ (Christian), with Rev. Gerald Parriott in charge. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park. Mr. Holmes passed away on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, at St. St. Joseph Hospital in Denver. He suffered a hip fracture on May 26 when he fell from a ladder. Death was attributed to a stroke. A son of Robert A. and Hannah Stone Holmes, Jesse A. Holmes was born October 22, 1888, in Chase County, Nebraska, near Champion. In 1901, he moved with his parents to a farm near Paoli. The family lived there for a short time and then moved to Holyoke, residing here for about a year and then moving to what is now the Dale Colglazier farm southeast of town. Mr. Holmes attended Phillips County High School and was graduated with the class of 1909. On September 30, 1914, he was united in marriage at Sterling to Rilla Wright, also of this community. To this union was born one child, Margaret, Mrs. Paul Broderick, of Bakersfield, California. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes established their first home on what is now the E.M. Conger farm south east of Holyoke. They resided there until 1923 when they sold the farm. They spent the summer of that year at Oakland, California then returned to Holyoke and Mr. Holmes and his brother, Clarence formed a partnership and purchased the Ford agency from the late Bruce Waln. The business was located in the building which now houses the Brown Motor Co., Inc. The partnership was dissolved in 1934 and Jesse Holmes then opened a repair shop in the rear of the American Legion building. He later bought the building now occupied by Lexâ€™s repair shop and continued in business there until the mid 1940s. In the fall of 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes went to California and Mr. Holmes was employed in defense work at Douglas aircraft plant at Santa Monica for several months. The returned to Holyoke in 1947 and he was parts man at the Holyoke Motor company for a time. He later became the local dealer for Allis-Chalmers farm equipment and continued in that business until 1952. Since that time he had operated a small repair shop at his home. Mr. Holmes was an elder in the Holyoke Christian church for many years. He was a member of the board of trustees and served on numerous committees in the church. Surviving Mr. Holmes are his wife, Rilla; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Broderick, Bakersfield, California, one granddaughter, Mrs. LaRae McCord, Las Vegas, Nevada, one great grandson and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Anna Brown; five brothers, Emmett, Oliver, Clarence and two who died in childhood, and one half sister.
