Description	:	WILLIAMSTOWN -- Jesse James Carney, 88, Williamstown, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a Lawrence hospital. Mr. Carney and his wife had raised livestock and brome hay north of Williamstown since 1961. He earlier had owned and operated Carney's Poultry and Eggs in Lawrence until 1963 and Duck's Sea Food restaurant in the 1950s. Read More	WILLIAMSTOWN -- Jesse James Carney, 88, Williamstown, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a Lawrence hospital. Mr. Carney and his wife had raised livestock and brome hay north of Williamstown since 1961. He earlier had owned and operated Carney's Poultry and Eggs in Lawrence until 1963 and Duck's Sea Food restaurant in the 1950s. He also had been an egg candler for Seymour's Co. in Lawrence many years ago. He was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Williamstown, the son of James and Stella Mayhew Carney. His mother died while he was an infant, and he was raised by his grandparents. He attended Brush Creek rural school and later school in Lawrence through the eighth grade. He moved to rural Jefferson County from Lawrence following a hip surgery in 1960. His role on the farm was to supervise all undertakings but the gardening. He was married to Fern Schulz on May 3, 1930, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Stella Lockard, Tecumseh, and JoAnne Connell, Shawnee; two sons, Jesse L. "Buster" Carney, Lawrence, and Donald L. Carney, Chicago; a stepbrother, Lennis Johnson, Lecompton; a sister, Bertha Crump, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be at Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Carney will lie in state after noon Monday at the mortuary where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International and sent in care of the mortuary.
