Jessie Elliott, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Elliott, was born February 21, 1888 about three miles south of Cambridge, and his soul took its flight on September 14, 1921, aged 33 years, 6 months and 23 days. The end came at Golden, Colorado where he had gone for his health. On November 15, 1910 he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Hennick to which union were born five children all of whom survive. All of his life was spent in Cambridge and community where he made many friends among his associates, and he will be greatly missed from the circles in which he moved. In the latter part of March 1921 he was stricken with tuberculosis. Everything was done for him that loving hands could do, but the end came in spite of all. He was interested and believed in spiritual things as his conversations indicated before he went west. He promised to read the Bible and pray and indicated his faith in prayer. He was preceded in death by his mother, one sister who died in infancy, and four brothers. Amos, Colman, James and one brother whom also died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, five children, Donald aged 10, Colista aged 8, Margaret aged 6, Howard aged 4 and Francis aged 1 year; also his father and four sisters, Mrs. Adelia Zook of Cambridge, Mrs. Diana Growser of Gifford, Idaho, Mrs. Lavina Scott near Ames, Mrs. Grace Sorenson of Gilmore City, Ia., and three brothers, Edward, Lewis and Ivin all of Cambridge, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. Note: Physicians in the 19th and 20th centuries believed that fresh air, high altitudes and abundant sunshine could cure all kinds of ailments, and Colorado had plenty of all three. While the belief about TB were not entirely medically sound, fresh air does prevent TB from spreading and high altitude stops TB bacteria from spreading as rapidly through the lungs. However, physicians believed that the contagious disease to be hereditary. In the 1880's scientist discovered the TB bacterium and they did not know yet that it could be spread by contact or breath. But knowing it was contagious, Coloradans were increasingly suspicious of TB tourist. TB patients were stigmatized in newspaper articles and in public life. It was called the "White Plague." The Colorado Legislature even debated a law to require TB patients to wear bells around their necks. TB also called consumption, had a death rate in Colorado projected to be one third of all Colorado deaths compared to a national average of 1 in 10. Today that number is approximately 3 deaths in 100,000. When Jesse and his family arrived by train in a box car, they could not afford the health like spas that cost $35 - $50 per day and became a part of the homeless problem brought on by desperate people who had bought one-way tickets but unable to afford treatment. Approximately a month later on September 15, 1921, the Jefferson County, Colorado Republican and Arvada Sun reported that Jesse Elliott, 33 years of age died at his camp in the city park, Wednesday morning, following an illness of tuberculosis, which resulted from influenza three years ago. He and his family have been camping in Golden for a month, and just a short while ago he was carried to the county hospital, but did not seem to improve and so returned to his family. The body was taken to his old home at Cambridge, Iowa, Wednesday evening on the eleven thirty train. He is survived by is widow and five children, and his father who is eighty-three years old, and other relatives in Iowa. Another news report: Jesse Elliott - The body was shipped to Cambridge for interment, in the White Oak Cemetery and the funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 from the United Brethren Church. Rev. E. W. Main conducted the services. He remained confined to a bed with pulmonary tuberculosis and the bed was in a box car on the train when they went to Colorado. The Colorado air would be good for him according to the doctor in 1921. They got as far a Golden, Colorado and the City Park. They lived in two tents. They had 5 kids with them all living in these tents in the park. After suffering with Tuberculosis , Jess Elliott , 33 years old , died at the Golden city park where he and his family had been camping for several weeks along the river . The remains were shipped by Woods Mortuary to the Elliott home in Cambridge , Iowa .
