JESSE SUTTON SMITH Jesse Sutton Smith was born November 10, 1884 in Old Cincinnati, and died at the Pawnee Manor, November 17, 1967 at the age of 83 years and 7 days. Jesse was the only child of Lewis Smith and his wife, Sarah Dennis. Born in a rural community he received his education at the Cincinnati school and its neighborhood activities. His life had many interests, one of which was farming, his last venture being on the well known 20 acre farm west of DuBois. He was not a regular carpenter, but made many things with his saw and hammer. In DuBois since 1908, he had a restaurant, was the butcher for the Farmers Union Store, was lineman for the DuBois Telephone Co., had his own poultry and egg business, and had done much custom butchering. He lived here always except for a short time in War time in Omaha. He cared for his widowed mother and lived a quiet unassuming life. On July 11, 1918, he was married to Mrs. Nellie Wanrow. The marriage was in St. Joe, but they lived their life of almost 50 years in DuBois. Stricken two years ago with paralysis, and Mrs. Smith afflicted with the infirmities of old age, they were privileged to spend their last months together at the Pawnee Manor. Surviving are Mrs. Smith and her family, and several Smith cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at the Wherry Mortuary with Rev. C. P. Grier, pastor of the DuBois E.U.B. church in charge. Mrs. C. P. Grier sang "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me" accompanied by Mrs. Ross Thiemann at the organ. Pallbearers were Max Church, Vic Habegger, R. O. Fink, Glen Chauza, Elmer Wissler and Lawrence Hartman. Burial was in the Cincinnati cemetery.
