Karns Dies In Minnesota J. U. Karns, long-time oil and gasoline dealer, died early this morning in a hospital at Rochester, Minn. The body is being returned to the Weston Behner funeral home in Fairfield where last rites are pending. Karns moved to Fairfield several years ago and established the Karns Oil company, distributing Phillips 66 products. He has been a long-time member of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and has been active in community affairs. ------------------- Fairfield Ia. Ledger Monday May 11, 1964 Pg. 8 Col. 3 Funeral Service Planned Tuesday For J. U. Karns Last rites for Jesse U. Karns, 68, owner of the Karns Oil Co., will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic church. Karns, 406 N. Court St., died suddenly Friday evening at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn. He had been seriously ill for three months. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Fr. Francis Henrickson. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The Rosary will be recited tonight at 7:30 at the Weston Behner Funeral home. Karns had been a resident of Fairfield for 31 years. He was associated with the Phillips Petroleum Co. for 34 years. Karns was born Dec. 30, 1895in Warren county, the son of Thomas and Theodosia Jones Karns. He was married to Grace Conway Jan. 21, 1921. He served in the U.S. Army in World War I and spent two months in a German prison camp following his capture at the Battle of Argonne Forest. Karns was a member of the American Legion, Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa Oil Jobbers Assn. He is survived by his wife and two children: Mrs. Patricia Bishop, Warrensburg, Ill.; and James "Joe" Karns, Florham Park, N.J. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; one brother, C. A. Karns, one step-brother, Avery Spalti; and one sister, Mrs. Alma Hardin, all of Pleasantville.
